Land owner/s contacted from the Deer Initiative

Hi Guys,

Whilst talking to a local farmer, whose land I stalk on. He asked if I would be interested in attending meetings on his behalf with the Deer Initiative. It appears several local land owners have been contacted and asked to meet with the regional representative from the initiative to discuss the size of the population and all the usual stuff we read about that goes with it.

Some of the things mentioned is a more Collaborative approach to management and wanting to work with all involved but not taking over anyone's stalking.

I would be grateful for your views and experiences with the Deer Initiative regarding such a scenario.

Thanks

Shared stalking? Aye I'm sure. Maybe all under their umbrella, under their rules. I'd go just to sit and listen, not mention anything and see what their plan is then sit at home and assess their plan being super cynical about everything. Chances are worse case scenario probably true lol

'Control freaks', is the expression that comes to mind.
Sounds a bit like The Angling Trust.

Once again we have people with absolutely zero idea of what this involves making negative comments. Thanks guys, you're a great credit to our hobby!

Personally, for me, I've trust issues with organizations like this. Any time any sort of organisation wants something like this there is usually an alternative motive to their reasoning. That's all I'm saying

Think you should go along with an " open mind" it could be a great oportunity to put the "stalkers" view to the debate, I would definately read up about " the deer initiative" to find out as much as possible about there agenda etc even contacting them directly and explain you have been asked to represent " farmer joe" and request the agenda and format of the meeting, either way I think you really need to follow this oportunity up
cheers

I understand you being sceptical , but the best way to find out is to listen to them, and find out exactly what they have in mind

it is Easier to make changes from the inside, so if you are involved you can influence the results

its too easy to shout " foul play" and sit back and do nothing

if the chance came up in my area I would jump at the chance to be involved in the decision making process, for the benifit of the deer and the stalking comunity

Cheers
Ray

I think you should go. If things are good, no problem. If not, then as they say, keep your friends close but your enemies closer. I'd go with a listening brief and don't commit to anything. You've got the real excuse that you would have to run anything that needs commitment past the landowner. I wouldn't dismiss out of hand anything, but keep a open mind and have a reasonable dose of scepticism.

im involved with the DMG on collaborative cull days and have been for I think 6 yr's now these are orchestrated by the DI and involve the estates in the local area and the FC .
we meet for a breakfast after each cull day usually 4/5 per yr nov DEC Jan Feb and march and I've met some very well informed stalkers through it some SD members .
nothing to dislike about them nothing sinister to worry about !
Norma
PS the DI don't designate stalkers to your estate that is your responsibility on the day they just collate the results for your area ,

I went to one as a landowner as stalkers were not invited, in it they recommended recreational local stalkers were exchanged by one of their chosen deer management groups as it was easier to deal with one group rather than many locals luckily nearly all the landowners wanted their usual local stalkers and after a season it all went quiet.

This was my experience too, although to be fair I've only been involved in one cull so far. The breakfast (paid for by the DI) was so good that many of the stalkers present suggested that we make it a weekly event!

WHAT DO THEY DO AND WHY DO THEY DO IT. Cynicism serves well I feel and in this case the motive is largely (exclusively) self interest - go, but keep your own counsel would be my view. if you recommend involvement, another avenue for the everyday day stalker is extinguished. Membership has to sell itself and opportunity is key.

Think I'm going to buy shares in tinfoil. Will make a fortune with the amount of hats being made on here.

So it would appear that those who have genuine knowledge of the DI report good things. The others.....well best not go there!
