Women and shooting

An article from the BBC here that shows shooting in a fair-ish light! It says that the percentage of women shooting is increasing. It concentrates on shotguns and points mainly to clay shooting, no doubt to avoid ruffling feathers (sorry) but the photos show what is obviously driven shooting too. Generally - good to see I think.

Not sure that the percentage of women stalkers is rising much though. Although I'm certainly no expert and could be wrong there. At the risk of being ever so slightly sexist, possibly the gralloching and generally getting your hands bloody might be off-putting to the fairer sex. When you shoot birds, dogs and pickers-up can do that sort of thing.

My ex wife was rubbish with a shotgun, but an excellent pistol shot and one of the best stalkers I have ever met. She had a thing about knives but overcame that to gralloch and larder (help with lifting) many, many deer including Reds. If the ladies put their mind to it they are first class in the stalking field and brute strength can be their only weakness.

I have had a fair number of women as clients over the years, if you are buying stalking you don't need to get your hands dirty, that's what the stalker is there for.
Having said that some were quite prepared to get stuck in,my own daughter was a dab hand in the larder but eventually she left home and got married, damn and blast!:old:

I've met a couple of women who manage deer
They're extremely good at it.
I think they're both AWs now too
I've not met Jan Andrews but believe she's a respected deer manager
I'd not be teaching or encouraging my wife to shoot though as it'd prove fatal

Some iffy mounting at 12 seconds in and at the end of the vid.
Rachel Carrie would wipe most SD members eyes on any dicipline.

Considering she-who-must-be-obeyed is a pescatarian and has no desire to shoot anything, she is more than happy to come stalking with me in the wilds after my annual stag, she lets me get on with the gralloching, but is more than happy to lend a hand with the moving and hanging in the larder. However.....having seen her playing darts and clearing a room in the pub, I'm actually glad she hasn't taken up shooting!:-D :scared: Seen plenty of very good female shots, both on the clays and on the hill.

My daughter is 12 , she is a reasonably good shot with a shotgun but is accurate as anyone I know with a 223, this was on a range in Texas when visiting friends there last year, where she also learnt to fly a light aircraft but only when up in the air. Can't wait to get her stalking when she is old enough to use a rifle in the uk, she has been with me and loved it , she asked loads of questions about the gralloch and shooting positions etc, Personally I think more women and youngsters should be encouraged to do stalking to hopefully keep it going long into the future. My wife has no interest at all but loves the venison especially as it is free range and has no qualms about my our daughter taking up stalking.

The rule in this house is "what you kill you cut", so my keen shooting teenage daughter (also a member of this site) has no choice in the matter, and to be fair has always dealt with it without a qualm.
Having assisted me with killing and cutting up sheep, pigs etc since she was about 6 years old probably gave her a good basic grounding!

I think I've mentioned before that I managed to spend most of last year as a "shooting instructor". We quite often had young couples where some chap would be taking his girlfriend shooting for the first time to "show her how". What normally would happen is that he would ask for a Desert Eagle (ours were in 44 Mag) or "a Glock" and proceed to shoot a pretty miserable group and seem well pleased with a hole on or near the target. First time she's would typically listen, and ask for a recommendation as to what to shoot - and proceed to turn out a respectably lethal grouping - much to the frustration and annoyance of their boyfriends or husbands.

What was interesting was that it was much harder to convince first time female shooters that rifle shooting is easier than handgun shooting - but I think that may have more to do with the wider gun culture here than anything else.

My experience is in no way scientific, but suggests that instinctively at least, women shoot better than men....

I have been teaching women to shoot handgun for the past few decades and I have found that women tend to be more attentive than men. I have also found that women (generally) don't want their husbands or boy friends or fathers to teach them. They would rather have an objective outsider do it. I worked at a large gunshop in the 80's and guys would come in looking for a gun for 'the little lady' and immediately ask for the Desert Eagle or 1911. I would show the woman a S&W 38 Special police trade it and in a matter of minutes, could have her completely understanding the mechanics of operation while standing at the gun counter. The gun was $149 and a box of commercial reloads was $5. The husbands didn't like me much.

My girl friend is competent with rifle and handgun but she grew up on a ranch.~Muir

Ah! The days of the Shotgun News Model 10 revolvers when all the police departments went over to 9mm pistols. I guess those quantities will never be seen again. There used to be pages of the things didn't there. That's a bit expensive, though, Muir $149 for a for an ex-PD Model 10? Or was that a "Grade 1 with minimal holster wear"?

Good!

The more people who are involved in the sport and support it, the less chance there is of that muppet Corbyn and his ilk banning it all.

My other half has been shooting and annoyingly is a pretty good shot! She's just not that keen on it really.. she'll do it now and then if we're all out as a group but generally she's happy to leave me to it. She's also not that keen on the bloodier side of stalking so I'm left to that on my own haha!

personally find this a strange topic,i put the food on the table and the wife cooks it.no share each has a task and thats it.if we are not carefull woman will ask to vote next:stir:

I think so me of the comments would lead me to assume a lot of members are of an older generation & have the same associated " views" on women and what they "should" or shouldn't be doing 🤔🤔.

Thankfully sometimes we do have a bit of what folks call progress and things change a little bit .

Women in shooting ....I welcome it .

And I'm not averse I to taking my turn in the kitchen either .

Which ones? I can't see any that warrant this comment?

Women are better than men to teach how to stalk and shoot. They listen and don't think they know it all.
