The Steyr Prohunter is 'THE' best hunting rifle ever made.

Under £1000 its a joint first between a used Sako 75 and a used Tikka M595. These are the rifles I've got so obviously they're best..:stir:

I have a Steyr Scout in 308 and I must say, it's a great rifle. It is a real half MOA gun, just like my Ruger Americans. It also sports a synthetic stock and a polymer magazine, just like my Ruger Americans. It has an integral rail, like my Ruger Americans, and it is easy to clean and service, like my Ruger Americans. It is kick-it-down-a-mountainside- pick-it-up-and-shoot rugged, just like my Ruger Amercans. In fact it's every bit as good as my Ruger Americans at only five times the price!

That Steyr is a fabulous rifle. What's not to like???~Muir

Unfortunately, the Pro Hunter has been phased out, to be replaced by a more expensive model.
They are selling them off this week at GSI, the importer, for $599.00. Very tempting to buy another.

You have to remember that the Steyr SSG-69 was ahead of its time in 1969.

It was a military sniper rifle, built from the ground up, to shoot 7.62x51mm match ammunition at 0.25 to 0.5 MOA, made in a factory, rather than hand built from an modified infantry rifle or hunting rifle. It came with a Kahles ZF 6x42 or Hensoldt with Milradian reticle and external turrets with meter range marks matching the 168-gr SMK.

It was the first commercial rifle in a molded plastic stock, a rigid, stable injection molded Cycolac stock with adjustable length of pull.
The receiver had integral rails and QR rings.
The internal rotary magazine of the early Mannlichers carried over to a removable magazine.
Rear locking, oversized bolt body, later Teflon coated, had no play and was smooth as silk.

All this carried over into the next generation of their hunting rifles, in 4 sizes: SL, L, M, and S.

The Steyr Prohunter Mountain. Perfectly engineered trigger, over-engineered bolt system and is a superbly accurate rifle which can take the abuse of stalking in those wild places which are hard to reach and require a hard tab in and out of your hunting ground.

You write with great passion and I love to see someone genuinely delighted with their equipment however,I am not sure how qualified you are to give such a review,I mean you have only 167 posts to your name since 2012 so, pardon me but I am not sure you really know what you are talking about??

The Steyr Prohunter really is the best rifle in the world!

Stupid question but is there really a place called fingrean? Google maps only throws up fingrean rd which seems like a pretty deserted sort of place. Im only asking because im not sure how well stocked the local gun store is so you could maybe have a look at a tikka T3 battue lite as a comparison.

The Steyr Pro Hunter is deadly accurate. No way would I have any other rifle.

Had a Prohunter in 6.5x55SE for quite a few years now. Shot extensively on range days and in pursuit of deer on regular forays to Perthshire.
In short I love it; sure the roller safety takes a wee bit of getting used to and the bolt's a miracle of modern engineering but it's the one rifle I reach for every time I go for deer.

And if and when you shoot out the barrel Neil McKillop will put a Bartlein 5R barrel on it for you which will be a tack driver, easier to clean and you can switch between lead core bullets and copper (if you develop your own loads) without any adjustment needed.
