Ear Protection, yes or no.

I also wear some round-the-neck plugs and pop them in just before taking a shot. I have them tied through the top buttonhole of my sweater where they hang down on my front chest so I never forget to have them with me.

I think if your moderated rifle is still too loud to shoot comfortably without ear defenders maybe look at getting a better moderator, I know all centrefires are loud but they should be quiet enough with a good mod on

I always wear them for all the Shooting sports I take part in from clays to pigeon to deer -hearing is quite easily affected by the high frequency, repetitive and high Db noise resulting from shooting, so better safe than sorry for me - WHAT I hear you say ?

Any sound over 140db does instant damage to one's hearing, so I'm not going to take it as guaranteed that a moderator will knock off more than 35db off the 175db of a .270 being fired.
I don't find moderated centrefire noise levels comfortable without muffs & I know my hearing wont fix itself if I break it, so I'll stick to wearing hearing protection whenever practical to do so.

Just as a heads up to those following this thread but not the other parallel hearing protection threads...I am very pleased with these 3M Peltor electronic plugs and find them comfortable enough to wear all day. No fiddle with little batteries going flat as they are Li-ion rechargeable, and have better maximum passive attenuation figures than all the other in-ear electronics I could find including Cens. They are being sold by others for over £500 so Amazon's price at £253 is a good offer.

There are cheaper active earmuffs on amazon for £30 quid ish, allied to a pair of foam push-ins the combination is all thats needed to solve the problem of un-moderated .308 in an old railway tunnel e.g. no need to compromise because of cost.
