BASC opposes new proposals for medical fees

Asking for a medical report and requiring the applicant to pay for it on first application, well maybe.
Asking for a holder to pay for a full medical report on each renewal is absurd when there is no reason to suggest it may be needed.

Agreed! The GP already has a flag against a shooter's name to show that Plod needs to be informed if a medical concern arises.

My doctor and the rest of the practice are vegan by faith and feel anything on this earth is a god or some kid of whatever upshot is they are anti killing of anything and as it would be them who will need to fill in the forms what chance have i should they refuse to do said forms ? as for moving doctors i't near imposable to find an old school English doctor as most are overseas getting the big bucks. wonder what or even if the report will say about this type of problem ?

Why are people with these idiotic ideologies allowed to occupy positions such as this? what happens if you contract an intestinal parasite for instance,, lure it out your arse by reading it bloody scriptures? and then release it in the car park.
Honestly you couldn't make it up!
its akin to putting gary glitter in charge of child protection services.

Its how the world works now sorry to say ? we are way down the list of things our rights are less than bot flies

As has been said, this is a way of taking firearms out of Public hands by stealth and wealth.
The Conservative gov't have always been committed to this and I remember seeing it in print many years ago.
It will only exacerbate a fragile system breakdown as I feel that some folk may well lose/or have a rifle and ammo stolen if they can't get a renewal.
Not the sort of situation we want, but in the sort of society we now live in, which the Police seem unable to cope with, its going to happen, as some folk will want their own protection.

As I suggested above and thank you for providing what the 'Voice of Shooting' could not. I have sent my letter to my MP as a consequence.

It really is not difficult to google "contact your MP", if you are not already familiar with the process. I think some posters on here would blame BASC for the weather.

If you cant see that making it easier to help your members complain in support of what you want to achieve and in the best possible way, simply and without fuss, then I would agree with you.
Equally some people are so blind to what BASC is NOT achieving, that you might suspect they are blind to being really positively and supportively critical of an organisation which has so much potential but is not achieveing it - take this as an example.

25 years of Swift (see attached Guest blog - by John Swift, chair of the Lead Ammunition Group - Mark AveryMark Avery) and Ali etc etc etc.
Blind I am not, are you?

And why not? Take that recent snowy spell; I mean, BASC must have known it was coming - but what did they do about it? Absolutely nothing! I am a member, paying an annual fee that is equivalent to, ooh, two pheasants, but I didn't receive a single alert or cold weather advice from the organisation. Can you believe it? Nobody told me to wrap up warmly, or to order extra heating oil. They didn't lobby the government for road tax exemption on four wheel drive vehicles. They didn't visit each member, on snowshoes, carrying emergency chocolate. Nothing! They basically just sat back and let the Beast form the East wash all over us.
By contrast, one other org put out a press release saying "This weather is disgraceful and could be the end of shooting as we know it; please give us your name and address so we can solicit funds from you...". That made me feel all warm inside (even if it was still bitterly cold outside).

Not particularly sensible nor intelligently cynical if that was intended ? -
I like a lot of your other posts and you obviously know that the volume of MP's letters achieved is in direct proportion to the ease of sending them and since BASC asked for it ?
We do not expect BASC to say anything about the weather (always excepting when its too harsh and shooting should be suspended.)
A poor shot and thankfully not typical.

The BASC advice suggests writing a letter. Few still write letters. Those that do might wait until they have a chunk of correspondence to process, and then sit down to do it in one hit after buying envelopes and stamps. Likelihood of remembering to add an MP letter to that slot? Slim I wager.

By contrast, if folk are already engaged in a forum like this then they are already online. It makes more sense for BASC to list a methodology that gives immediate access to your MP rather than suggest snail mail. And not everyone is Google au fait or computer literate. BASC could definitely achieve a higher membership vocalisation if they applied links to these resources. Ideally, David's piece should have two links: (1) WriteToThem and (2) Click here to tell BASC what you want us to say on your behalf.

BTW, the power of WriteToThem is that you are subsequently polled on whether MP responded. The league table of responsiveness is published. MPs that fail to engage with their constituents are named and shamed.

Well, I've written to my MP. No harm in 'horns of the buffalo' approach to this, hit them from all angles and raise the issue as something that is serious.

The Conservative gov't have always been committed to this and I remember seeing it in print many years ago.

And the first of them all? Winston Churchill, I believe, who when Home Secretary in 1911 attempted to introduce gun controls on pistols. Although he, of course, owned several pistols. But then he was always one of the governing elite...

If (big "if") there is to be a charge for the initial GP scan, then it seems to me that this should be:

a) set at an agreed standard level across the country, and not left to the vagaries of individual GP whim

b) form a contract based on written service standards; ie if the GP doesn't perform the contractual task within the stipulated timescale, or to a satisfactory standard, then we - the paying customers - should have access to quick, free and easy form of redress

Also, such a one-off fee adds to the case for a much longer certificate life, akin to the driving licence, to my mind. I mean, if there is a marker placed on a certificate holder's medical file, and the GP has a duty to report any worrying medical condition that subsequently arises (and of course the police have realtime monitoring of any misbehaviour) then a major part of the rationale for the current comprehensive, time limited, certificate renewal process disappears, doesn't it?
