17 remington

Thankyou bluesako , is that a fairly easy process ? And Would that also mean I would have to have a slot for a 222 or 223 on my fac ?

I’d be surprised if you could safely achieve those figures.
Ken.

Morning Ken,
It was a friend of mine that quoted some figures some time go, I messaged him last night asking what he was getting out of his Ackley Hornet. I got it wrong it was 3660 I thought it was 3900.I've had 4900 out of my 17rem, was looking for the photo of the chrono reading but it's lost somehow. And yes over pressure and blown primer, that was with BLC2 and 3/4 of a grain less than max, but changed from rem brass to nosler custom. Hence the increase in pressure.20180505_112959-800x600.webp20180505_112818-800x600.webp20180505_112838_crop_834x349.webp

A few pics of mine, Sako S491, Sassen barrel, Stalon mod and 're blued by Midcounties blacking from Lichfield. .
I asked Steve Kershaw if he could do something for me and this is the end result

No you don't need the variations on your ticket, 17 Remington yes but not the other because your not going to posses them, the gun smith will if you know what I mean.
Ask whoever your chosen gun smith is to source you an action/ donor rifle. They will have the abilty to purchase what you need and do the work, I would say cost would be around 1k to 1200, depending on what action you have.

4400fps (chronoed) with 20gn bullets. My go to fox load.
No blown primers, no enlarged primer pockets, no sticky extraction.

That’s easier than first thought , i did initially think that I would go down the route of having a rebarrel on something , then I can be sure of what it’s done and should last me a good few years , has anyone got any recommendations of rifle builders ? Thanks

nope ,the action isnt calibre spesific, its what you rebarrel it to, as long as you have a 17rem slot on your ticket your ok, just say your gunsmith has a 223rem ,he can rebarrel it to 17rem and sell it to you bingo, its a good choice to start with a new barrel, unless you know the history of the rifle, imho i would find the action you want e,g, tikka sako remmy cz howa and go from there dave.ps good luck

Looks very nice, jb1.
Steve does excellent work.
I’ve had several 17 Rems. over the years, starting with my first in (I think) 1972. It was probably the first one in the UK. I bought that one second hand from John Longstaff who used to have part of Fred Carrs iron mongers shop in Pudsey. Some here will remember John.
I’ve shot quite a lot of foxes with 17 Rems. since then and think it’s agreat fox calibre, however, I have had a couple of splashes when hitting a rib, and these required another shot.
Hornady HP were the bullets I prefered.
Cheers,Ken.

Sorry, thought the thread was about the 17 rem.

Yes it is but I threw in a curve ball and mentioned a 17 Ackley Hornet biting at the heels of the rem. I was wrong, I miss quoted figures.

And I've beat you:-P by 500fps :british:
I've settled for 4450 20vmax and 25.5 varget.

I can't help but notice jon smith that you dont have mod ? Strange as i see your in the UK, for a moment I thought your were overseas

Thankyou for your replies , I will find an action and go from there , it will be a rifle that is used a lot so it’s probably worth the time and money to do it right , has anyone got any recommendations of gunsmiths they’ve used ? Thanks

Don't know any your end, but the ones I can recommend. Norman Clarke's and Steve Kershaw.

hi, i,ll give you a good tip when cleaning your 17 rem, forget about the patches they sell for 17 cal, their to small, use 22 cf patches, 1/1/8 and a 22 cf bore guide ,yes it works, and if you have a 22 cf, you can use same patches on both rifles, and dont use a 17 bore guide you will bend your rod, cheers dave.

Dave, spot on :).

Dave how many shots do you reckon accuracy drops off at, I've got to about 30 then it's clean time. That's sniping rabbits by the way.

hi jb1 ive never shot more than 23 rounds in a day with my 17, but my friend with his 17 rem shot about 67, in one long afternoon on rabbits,i was spotting for him, and he was hitting them out to 350 yards without a good clean, i clean normaly after 20 rounds or 2or 3 rounds, oh and dont use a bronze bore brush use a nylon one as you say jb1 30 rounds is about normal, when i would clean . dave

Thanks Dave,
I've just amazing how that little pill gets to those ranges accurately, and it doesn't take it long to get there either.
And you get to see all the hits-and misses.

willorchard, Its all good info popping up

Yes many thanks for your replies , yes jb1 , very good information popping up , I never expected to get the replies I have , I guess it shows it’s a little calibre with a big following , all this information will prove very valuable in the future, thank you for all your help , I will try and post any progress updates , I’m itching to get one now , thanks again chaps
