Available: SNH Flanders Moss NNR - Deer Management Permission

SNH are having trouble controlling deer on Flanders Moss as there own guide lines that they put in place to protect the moss have put restrictions on what can be used. No quad bikes or Argo' s for extraction.

I’m quite interested in tendering for this, we have a lot of experience in tendering for FCS / SNH work, access to low ground pressure machinery professional insurance and we have premises at Doune which is close by. If anyone is interested in coming in on this with me please get in touch.
Ive also been looking for an excuse to buy a Soft trac for peatland restoration work.

Tender states the successful person/syndicate must have ATV ticket (if one is to be used) so doesn't look like there is a restriction on ATV's

t is all sssi so i will imagine heaps of hoops to jump throu.

While i did see the bit about atv ticket, could be guidlines about fuelling it and any spilages/oil leaks. Can be strict on stuff like that
I worked on a similar site once and meant to take saw off site to refill with petrol every time (aye right)
Spending big money down south trying to restore these sites, have heard of them using skylines and helicopters to extract piles of crappy wee birch trees.

We went a field trip there with university to see a raised bog and the ground was so sensitive/fragile we weren't even allowed onto it and just had to look over the fence from farmers fields. And that was just a few university students studying conservation

Uphill out with a low ground beast on yer back: aye, the shooting will be the easy bit, as ever! Nice bit ground, but surrounded by lots of red tape!

which is one of the reasons not all ground is suitable for rec stalkers - and the right contractor will pitch their bid at the right level.

The ground is fine for rec stalkers, the fact that they wouldn't allow any type of vehicular extraction has always been the stumbling block for stalking it (plus the syndicate owner wasn't interested).

It is reasonably level compared with most other Red ground I'd imagine. Used to watch a huge herd about 1,000 yards out on the Moss whilst I sat wasting yet another session in the seat around the outskirts.

It talks about lessees and permission, but also contract and contractor. Is the bidder paying SNH or is SNH paying for a deer management service ?

Seems a lot of hassle to pay for it. 1,000m drag over flat to get £150ish for a carcass. Without all the other bs about 2 on site, GPS each animal shot etc etc.

Yup, piles of public cash to 'restore' some of these bogs. I would like to see some cost benefit analysis of some of these operations, but conservationists don't understand economics. We will be approaching net de-forestation in the UK, if we aren't there already. I've seen sites felled at great cost that should have turned a good profit if they were managed by foresters and not by conservation fannies. Birch regen cut over and over at great expense, which keeps coming back. Some of these zealots hate trees so much they should be banned from owning books or using bog paper !

That makes me smile. I have been working for these people for a long time now, and sometimes their method does seem a little mad. But if you just do what they ask they are actually quite good to work for and they always pay promptly.:norty:

Been looking at this, seems it could be some graft but interesting opportunity. I would bid but still need to finish my DSC2 and get EFAW+F. Dam these requirements:banghead:

Depends what you man by days. Full days no, not every week. Mornings/Evenings plus other times around work i'm sure would get the job sorted.
