Incredible, eh? It's a modern photograph, taken in Tsavo in 2017. The big 100-lb-plus elephants still exist in places. They are canny and old: perhaps 50-60 years of age.Amazing tusks there. Wonder if you'd get them that size these days.
I like that photograph and your wife's choice of book. I'd also like to see more of what I strongly suspect is a very likeable CarlW library.

Iirc I believe she did often walk with them resting on the ground toward the end, she was much photographed. johnWould be very useful for a bit of ploughing....

That is a cow called F_MU1, the Queen of Tsavo. As you say, she died in 2017 at a great age: of starvation during the drought (as is the natural order of things), rather than to a poacher's bullet.
