BASC condemns threats made to Chris Packham

Apr 30, 2019

BASC has unequivocally condemned threats made to Chris Packham which he revealed in a television interview earlier today.

The BBC presenter revealed this morning on ITV’s Good Morning Britain that the police are currently investigating threats of a “serious nature” which he said were part of an ongoing campaign again him and his home since the revocation of the general licences last week.

Natural England has said its decision to revoke the licences was in direct response to a legal challenge from the group Wild Justice, whose directors include Packham.

BASC previously condemned targeted, illegal behaviour after Packham tweeted a picture of dead crows hanging on a gate outside his house.

In response to Packham’s latest comments during today’s interview with Piers Morgan, Steve Bloomfield, BASC’s executive director of operations and shooting, said: “We have already stated in unequivocal terms that we do not condone any illegal behaviour. And for people to continue to behave in such a manner is utterly unacceptable.

“It will be no surprise to anyone that we don’t agree with Chris Packham on how best to manage the countryside, in fact we probably couldn’t be further apart at this stage. But the sort of behaviour and threats described by Packham does not help anyone’s cause and must stop.”

However, BASC has challenged Packham’s assertion during the TV interview that farmers have been ‘misinformed’ in the row over the withdrawal of general licences without consultation or notice from Natural England.

The UK’s largest shooting organisation has criticised ITV for allowing Packham’s statements to go unchallenged by countryside experts during the broadcast.

BASC had agreed last Friday to take part in a live debate with Packham and Morgan and had already booked travel and accommodation for staff, but were cancelled by the broadcaster at the 11th hour yesterday after it said Packham agreed a deal with GMB and the Daily Mirror newspaper.

The programme published a short statement from BASC during the broadcast which urged environment secretary Michael Gove to step in and show leadership as fury and anger builds among the rural community.

But BASC said the broadcaster had also failed rural England by cancelling the televised debate with Packham.

Garry Doolan, BASC’s deputy director of communications, said: “That is simply fake news by Packham. Farmers and the rest of the rural community could not be clearer on where the blame lies for the current fiasco and their anger and frustration is palpable.

“ITV did not allow representation of the reality of the situation being faced by those in the countryside. ITV has failed us all by not allowing the rural community to have a voice in that debate with Chris Packham.”

Typical of Packham..... using celebrity status to swerve a debate that he would lose.
Glad it was aired on ITV comedy news, i tend to avoid due to involuntary uncontrolled emptying of bowels, and Piers Morgan associated nausea. :finger:

Thanks for the update, Debbie. Keep fighting.
Kind regards,

Regrettably, a very necessary and timely press release. If we are having fight, let's do it without lowering ourselves to the level seen in politics these days.

DebbieBASC doesnt reply and therefore probably doesnt read the responses.

Its still advertising and very much overdone.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment so does CA, NGO, SACS etc - the 'BASC says' thing is getting on my nerves - I really don't care I get my news first-hand. I would almost go so far as to say its 'disappointing'.

Where is the direct response to Packhams use of the news media?

Chris has my sympathies if he or his family have been in receipt of death or violence threats, I know just what it is like having received something similar from hunt saboteurs

Let’s just be clear: nobody knows who has attacked Mr P, his family, or the reasons why. We can only speculate. So, there’s no need for us to get all apologetic or anything. Whoever the perpetrator was he’s not one of “us”, for we are law abiding, civilised people. It is the anti hunting brigade that pull off these kinds of stunts.

I find CP extremely irritating. I don’t wish him any harm but I wish he’d stop meddling with our wildlife. He just isn’t wired up right.

12 'adlets' and counting - who else can manage 5 consecutive posts ?
I hope someone is lobbying MP's - they must be since neither NE nor MP's can seemingly be bothered to reply - probably too busy being distraught by the comments of certain shooting orgs.

Totally agree with Tim and others, no one should ever be/feel threatened.

But it is hard to feel much sympathy for him, never heard of him apologising for the many death threats sent to game farmers, hunt staff members, big game hunters ( domestic stock trophy hunters:stir::stag: apologies no sheep smi!ey) and many others, while not himself still folk he could influence.
I dare say some could consider it karma???

Kes u really can't help it, can u?
I'd say basc is almost a toxic brand on here I doubt many folk would join after the many slaggings they get

I will say the other orgs are mibbee missing a trick ( esp if it as good an advert as u claim), I know most are out there doing the exact same, but if they can't be bothered to publish it themselves it will look like basc is doing all the work.

Mibbee basc is beginning to find its long lost 'voice' after all.

Mr packham seems to like telling others about wildlife and what to do with it.Anyone visited his zoo on the isle of wight ,bit double standards i would say.
Wildlife in cages ye that works.

Agree Tim, can be scary stuff from Pikeys or Sabs.
You just have to be a good Boy Scout and be prepared. Believe me I had to watch my back for a long while, even change names and still keep a weather eye out after 45 years.

Yeah and if you complained would you have got a Police investigation? Doubt it, and it's 'all part of a campaign against him' what about his campaigns against gamekeepers et al. it's all double standards isn't it?'

I saw this on Chris Packhams FB page where the post gets over 1700 comments with the vast majority being supportive and pledgeing to fight harder. There are a few from shooters calling it fake news etc and in nearly all of the ones I saw they used abusive language and personal attacks.....well done guys......another few nails in the coffin.
