Two males marking in house since the new male turned up!

I have a 2 yrs old and now 1 yr old pair of bulldogs. The first one has been great trained up fine and been reliable, never chewed anything up etc or marked in the house.

2nd one turns up.....pain in the arse. Hes definitely not all there unfortunately....

Now recently both of them have started marking upstairs on our clothes (if kids or wife :banghead: ) have left them on the ground or the 2yr old has started doing it on our bed. The younger one can't get onto our bed!

I have read that it is due to them trying to mark something that smells of us to make the other dog think that we smell of them when wearing it so they are the more popular dog? It's staring to get really annoying now.

I have had the younger one snipped about a month ago and was hoping that would help but it hasn't so far.

Any ideas guys, my next step is puting a baby gate up but I told.the wife that wasn't an option when they were puppies as they should be trained properly so they didn't chew stuff upstairs etc.

I bet your house smells nice!

Definitely go with the gate: Why would you want a dog upstairs anyway? Especially one that pees on stuff!

Have had a bit of the same issue here, when introducing second terrier. In the end we sussed that it wasn't marking as such, but it was jealousy based. One dog didn't want to be outside while the other one was in, and vice versa, in case they missed out on something. So they stopped going to the door asking to be let out for a pee, until in the end they just peed inside.
Now we make a point of putting them both outside together at appropriate intervals during the evening, and they're getting the message. It's like house training all over again, but in tandem.
Also, most evenings they're not coming indoors anyway. It was okay with just one, but 2 = double the hair, double the smell and more than double the trouble! Best place for dogs is outside.

As above outside is the only real place for them if you have the space restricted mine to just the kitchen in the end

Restriction need not mean gates, closed doors etc. if you train the boundaries from the start. Neither of our terriers were puppies when we got them, and both had been allowed considerable freedom indoors in their previous homes, but they both were quickly taught that they have access to two downstairs rooms only, and upstairs is totally forbidden territory. No gates or doors required, and they never overstep the mark.

ok,,, cover the bed in that temporary sheep netting, making sure its well covered with various items of your clothing, ,,, connect the "electric shepherd" unit to a 12v battery and wait for one or more dogs to pee on the bed, I doubt they will do it a second time..
It has the added advantage of you don't have to tell the missus what it does, but suggest an "early night" ;)
then at an opportune moment "flick the switch" and hang on!!:rofl::eek:

ps, when you say "trained up" do you mean general training, or tracking and locating deer training?

House smells fine! Luckily....they only do it on any clothes that are laid on the ground and recently the bloody pillows or bed covers, so they get washed instantly. Both always go out together to pee, play together fine too but the younger one is a little more aggressive and that's the reason he got the snip.

They are just home/ house pets and are trained to that sort of level. I can walk the older one off the lead etc. Younger one walks funny and breaks his claws so can't go for decent walks but that's another story.

I don't mind them coming up the stairs occasionally as long as they behave etc. They don't sleep up there etc and don't cause any issues for smell etc because all downstairs is wood floors and they are down there the majority of the time if not 99% of the time. Usually only come up to be nosey and see where kids are or wife.

Think I'll pop the gate up for a month or so and start the training for not going upstairs at all with it down.

Perhaps if your pillows and bed covers weren't bloody...... :-|

I have never had the problem,I have never had a dog in my house unless for an emergency whatever!
I just don`t agree in having animals in houses myself.
My dogs are outside to repel invaders.
