Earning your crust

my father in law was a tail gunner in a Lancaster, the following quote makes you appreciate the quality of the crewmen.

"It had a crew of seven from the pilot to the gunners. Everyone had to play their part to stay alive. The Lancaster was one of the most dangerous places to be in the entire war – the life expectancy of a new recruit was just two weeks"

he's still with us, some of those he flew with were not so fortunate.

My old fella was a flight engineer in Lancs. He didn't get too friendly with rear gunners, because usually they only lasted a few ops.
However I did have a good friend who did 31 ops before spending a long time in hospital and living to the age of 82. :british: :british: :british:

I have a Harley that would scare the living sh1t outta ya.
and there's a few of them around.
meet Hildo.

Yup, apes and a harly and throw in corners and that would scare the crap out of me.
V twins were always good at standing 1/4. I know they used to drag the Yamaha Tr1 as they used to tune the socks off them. But I digress.

yep, hp looks good on the dyno, but torque gets you off the line quicker.

Dad made "Finn" Grass Track Bikes, His racing name as Danny Finn, all built here in the sheds out the back of the house, he poached Alf Hegon frame builder, built the engines his self, Len made the jigs, Dad cut the tubes and prep the joints etc then brazied them...apart from the wheels tanks seats all made here...

I am suitably impressed , Alf Hagons shop in Leyton was like a youth club to us as youngsters, we would hang around the place at every opportunity, dreaming about the various bikes inside, he often placed a sprint bike in the window as a display. I never had much of a home life, and gazing at those bikes kept me occupied and out of trouble I'm sure, he was unknowingly responsible for my lifelong interest in motorbikes and associated lifestyle. I live a very different life now, more settled, and still have a v twin in the workshop. I went to school[occasionally ]with a guy called John Bray, he was a novice rider in grass track as a kid on a highly modified tiger cub in a hagon style frame, he could ride pretty good for a kid, his family had high hopes for him as an adult rider, I moved away and lost everything connected with that part of my life, I often wondered if he pursued it and became well known,. thank you for posting that. :thumb:
ps does the name Amy W mean anything to you.?

awesome sir, I'm retired now, I wonder if we were ever in the same place all those years back. I edited my last post concerning Amy W, a relative?

If I was a sensitive soul, I could be wounded by such a comment:lol:……… On my third Harley, so obviously don't get wisdom with age!
3rd? My jealousy knows no bounds. Only rode an electraglide once, loved the sound, kept grinding out on the corners. Have to learn to slow down.
I do like vtwins. Got a tr1 in the garage that I fancy turning into a cafe racer some day. Time and money, always time and money,
I digress again.
