.17hmr suppressor, which one?

A recent night excursion resulted in rounds whanging off in all directions. Knowing I'm not that bad I had a poke around and found that my moderator's innards had decided to become its outards by reducing themselves to sand and running out of the ends.

So, which to buy as a replacement? I like the look of the PES over barrel* model (to keep the overall length down), does anyone have experience of these?


* I came this >< close to typing 'shroud' just to see the same outburst of indignation I got last time.

I burnt through a Sak quick. No issues with the wildcat panther and its easy to strip and clean which is important for a dirty round like the HMR. They are very well made

DM80 on mine had it about three years now , very happy with it and easy to strip and clean

As l use a Wildcat Evo on my .223 l just bought a .17 diffuser and screw that in when using the HMR, perfect.

I use my sonic 45 mod on my hmr and it's a good bit better than that sak I think although a little large haha

It's not your moderator that's disintegrating it the crap let behind by the 17HMR round.
After about 20 rounds you can get a teaspoon's worth of it.

I have a vertex chambered DM80 on mine which I strip and clean (toothbrush and hot water with an occasional soaking with WD40/rimfire blend cleaner to clean off the carbon) after each outing. I've seen several different types and they all collect the same sandy sh*te and need regular cleaning.
There is likely nothing wrong with the mod that a good cleaning won't cure..

Thanks Miki but I opened it up and in addition to the crap the mod itself was showing signs of wear. It was a cheapie that came with the gun and weighed half a ton so to be honest it's no hardship replacing it.

As I needed one ommediately and I couldn't find anything like a Wildcat in stock locally I've gone with an AT for now.

The problem with the aluminium type is, as you have found out, they burn and disintegrate over time. I would look into the steel construction type like, ASE Utra, Unless you have very expensive sound measuring devices at your disposal you wont know the difference between any of the others, and being honest the rabbits shouldn't know anyway, unless you plan on missing allot.

Its not the carbon, unburnt powder or because youve not sprayed it with this and that or whatever else pops up in conversation, the cutting is from the heat. Alli is good as far as weight goes but doesnt like being burnt.

I have had a DM-80 on my .17 HMR and it is doing the job just fine, for some 10 years now.
The Wildcat Panther I have in .22Lr, that would be another good option if you buy the .17HMR model.

Yep. I agree. I have a .223 JetZ on my heavy barrel .17 Remington. Most of my shots are from a bipod, so the extra weight is not noticeable.
