BASC Council - changing the tone

Yes Carl, I would support this move and try to get Kes onto the BASC council.

Assuming he / we are successful in getting him onto the council, I want to avoid a situation where Kes is seen on here as just another BASC representative and comes in for a lot of abuse and then gives it up again.

I know that sounds a bit pessimistic but I can see it happening.

Perhaps we should give thought to us on SD creating an activists wing with nominated members like Kes to go onto various shooting and countryside bodies.

This wing would take its direction from the consensus view of members on here and then take our collective views into the various bodies on which they sit as council members.

If the shooting and countryside bodies can't form themselves into a stronger and more coherent lobbying body then perhaps we should and give them some leadership and guidance.

This is a bit radical I know but as you say in your intro we face challenges the like we have not seen before.

I'd be up for this initiative. :thumb:

With regard to the those on SD who would support it being too small to get it enacted, I *believe* that the actual number of votes cast in previous council elections is actually a very small percentage when compared to the membership numbers - so it might be possible?

Being able to get the hare running via social media, as in Farcebook, ****ter and other forums, (exactly where BASC are currently behind the game) would be a big advantage.

So, the only question to be answered at this stage Kes is what's the tee shirt slogan going to be? 'B*llocks to B*SC'?

How many open/national vacancies will there be next year ?

One person can not achieve a lot and there needs to be a strategy beyond getting one chap on. Some very competent and determined men have walked away in frustration (David Frost, William Notton) while others have persisted but never had the impact they might have (Simon Breasley etc).

BASC Council is unusual compared with other boards/governingbodies because of the large presence of staff. I understand too that a lot of the real power rests with the Executive and Finance Committee - you would need allies to access this.

Oddly, there are less votes cast these days than in the past so it is in theory easier to get someone elected. Back in the day (before the world went online) I was part of a successful campaign to get wildfowlers elected to the available seats on Council. It took a lot of planning and a lot of spadework.

It would help if Kes were to post a draft list of aims and objectives, and a curriculum vitae.

I agree and support you in your effort but how long will this all take. And why are the council members who are there now not sorting these problems out. They should resign now.

Hi Basil,

I don't know when the next vacancies become available, nor how many there will be (@kes is trying to find out).

Given your experience, it would great to have you involved in Kes's campaign.

He is writing a 'mini-manifesto' at the moment and will share it in here. Note that he will only rejoin BASC and stand if enough of us express our support on this thread.

V best,

Carl

Best of luck to Kes, and I agree with the principle entirely.

However, before I'd consider supporting BASC again, either in principle or financially (especially financially!) I'd like an explanation as to why they haven't been publicly lobbying for support, why they allowed the medical fees to go unchallenged, why they allowed the Scottish air rifle legislation to go unchallenged, why they haven't sought judicial reviews, why they haven't been issuing public statements refuting the outright lies and nonsense peddled by Packham and his Wild Justice idiots, why they still haven't achieved the 10-year FAC, why they turned belly-up at the cancellation of shooting shows, why they've allowed the nonsensical trophy-hunting ban to even get off the ground, why they were remarkably silent during the Wild Justice General License fiasco, and why they appear to have tucked-tail and run from this forum rather than face their justifiably-annoyed denigratiors?

The 'Voice of Shooting'?

I expect they'll robustly ignore any of these questions, though :-|

I feel exactly the same, Woodsmoke. However, I feel much better when I picture Kes being disproportionately annoying at those council meetings...

I assume from this BASC Council Elections 2019 - results - BASC that 2947 votes were cast from a membership of c 153000. So c150k members aren't interested in who represents them at the BASC executive. Assuming the platform that Kes will be standing on is based around "there are fundamental issues with the effectiveness of BASC As the Voice of Shooting and I am going to stand so I can shake it up from within" then a key issue will be getting the 150k members to 1. understand that there really are issues and 2. mobilise their votes. Getting access to them will be key and understanding how to a bit of an issue. I would guess BASC will be unlikely to publish articles/manifestos/commentary from aspiring council members that are critical of them....

I agree. As per your post #24, social media will probably be the most useful tool in getting that message across.

Whilst I broadly welcome this initiative... I'll get me coat :coat:

I'd be happy to vote for Kes if he thinks he can inject some aggression into BASCs response to the threats that are before us.
Be good to see a few more candidates with the same ethos.

Hey gang,

I'm pretty sure you would all agree that our countryside way of life is under greater threat today than it has been at any other time in living memory. Many of us are dissatisfied with the muted and deferential response of our largest shooting organisation to this threat.

As a result, a good number of you have left BASC and joined other organisations. I have considered doing so myself, but - on reflection - I do not believe that further fragmentation of our ranks is a winning strategy. We already have a large shooting organisation and it contains a number of dedicated and hard-working people. I think we need to make it work for us.

To do this, we members of the Stalking Directory (whom I find, generally, to sit at the more militant end of the shooting-politics spectrum (myself included)), need to get our own representative on the BASC Council.

After some pleading from me, our very own @kes has agreed to rejoin BASC and to stand for council if sufficient numbers of us commit to supporting him. I think we are privileged to have a candidate of such intelligence, knowledge, industry and passion who is willing to represent the views of shooters. I will vote for him in a heartbeat.

To gauge the level of interest in supporting this effort, please would you express your thoughts by reply below.

And note, this ain't just for current BASC members: if you left them, then I beg you to rejoin. We need to get a more aggressive voice on that council.

Kindest regards,

Carl
Agree and support
