Alpine Dachsbrake

I've been taking a close look at these too. When Wilhelm von Daacke was crossing dachshunds with small mutant German bloodhounds I have no doubt he was producing something very similar............As interesting as that might be (or not) I can't help feeling that for the price they would cost to import and then get enough good examples to make a viable UK gene-pool - most would probably do just as well with something like a working dachshund x beagle??? Interesting breed though for sure.

My current dog is a teckel x cocker. He displayed amazing skills from an early age. He found his first deer at 6 months and it was shot 24 hours earlier. Since then he has excelled. 10 years later he is getting old and is finding the heather tough. I am trying to train a fox red lab at the moment but he just isn't cutting the mustard. He has seen 40 animals shot but doesn't seem to be overly interested. I always wanted to cross a dachs with a Bavarian and then I discover this breed. Would the cost of importation be huge?

I would guess a decent example would be 1000-1500 euros plus costs of around 500 euros depending on the country. That's just ball-park, I do know some breeders so could get some figures. As a one-off it's not too pricey but to get the breed UK established would take some investment.

There are a few guys doing working dachs crosses both with beagle and cockers.

here's a thought why not just go to the respective breed organisation become a member, then do the standard required and put back into the society and improve on the breed instead of trying to reinvent the wheel with cross breeding or small gene pool creating the same issues the bgs has from doing exactly what your talking about, you don't need an established amount of dogs in the uk you use the ones already there, further the breed and put the dogs back to the society members dogs are cheaper, better and you have a guaranteed working ability, why is it people here always think they can do it better and ruin a breed.

Beware the Dachsbracke temperament.
Can be very nippy towards kids and other dogs.
Very good dogs and as Mereside states go the right way to begin with.
One of the best dogs I’ve ever seen track was a dachsbracke-died young with problems in the spine-the breed are prone to back issues.
Creating mongrels are not the same as established breeds, whether you want too think you are or not-takes generations to establish a breed.

I am a little bit confused by this reply

"why not just go to the respective breed organisation become a member"...........What breed organisation?

"instead of trying to reinvent the wheel with cross breeding"..........I don't think 'Fia' is trying to reinvent any wheels, he has simply stated his teckel x cocker works well.

"small gene pool creating the same issues the bgs has from doing exactly what your talking about".....Don't follow this comment at all????

"you don't need an established amount of dogs in the uk you use the ones already there".......Again, don't follow?? What breed are you talking about?

"why is it people here always think they can do it better and ruin a breed"......Again I don't have a scooby what breed you are talking about??

Of course, I wasn't suggesting and I don't think 'Fia' was that a first cross is the same as an established breed - that would be ridiculous. Some guys just enjoy working cross-breeds. Back to the old....each to his own I guess.

I would not buy a Alpenländicher Dachsbracke. One simple reason. Never buy a dog who's breed name you can't pronounce when you've had a drink or two. The few I've seen make great hunting dogs and tracking dogs. The problem for the UK stalker, deer manages is, is what are you going to call it when they have improved the breed by crossing with a Lab or what ever other breed takes their fancy. The name won't slip off the tongue like, cockerpoo or labradoodle.

I didnt mean to start an arguement! The dog I use was not crossed on purpose. He is still a great dog. I would love to work a Teckel but they are not practical in the heather, hence my interest in the longer legged Dachs Bracke. All my friends use Bavarians which are also a fab dog. All breeds start with a cross I suppose?
