Miniature Schnauzer

The right size, the right temperament, from what i have read, the right amount of exercise needed.
I know they are a ratter breed originally,
Any experience of them deer tracking?

more farm dogs, our standard was a fine yard dog, they dont really have the physic ( in my opinion ) for tracking. get a rescue gascon or a griffon maybe, there are plenty of them - great for tracking, maybe no so good as a stand dog.

all schatters tho are grand dogs, have one again in a heartbeat

good luck

I see you are sitting on the fence again.

Well you are both against them, so maybe the quest continues on.

I would add to the no collective.

Pals got one - really anti social with other dogs and barks at every moving thing (mainly runners and cyclists)

Neighbours got one too - grumpy little thing.

Get a Lab - end of. 👍

I'd say give it a go. If a dog is good at finding rats etc then it will be able to track a deer. The only thing missing in the equation is you and your ability to teach it what interests you. Lots of games as in tugs of war and recalls and your motivation for the dog is the piece of deer skin...not tanned or anything....but straight from a deer...or previously frozen and now defrosted or the games that you are playing with. From down wind take it into a "kill" be it yours or someone elses and give it encouragement to "play" with the carcass...even if it just deer insides and/or skin.

Don't expect it to work off lead. This may happen but the dog may be unpredictable when off lead. Hunting/tracking with the dog on a lead is not an issue. Some basic obedience is a good thing though and this begins the day after you brought the pup home.

In comparison to your Schnauzer I've been using K.C. Cav Spaniels for some 14 years to hunt and point Sambar Deer and Wild Dogs. That's a long way from the breed only being a lap dog....and the excitement level is sky high when they see the rifle come out of the safe.

Not sure about the right temperament- there is not a single schnauzer in my village that wouldn’t fly off the handle when I walk past them with my dogs.

My cousins have them and they are okay away from other dogs and great family pets. Giant schnauzers are used as patrol dogs, but it’s a long time since miniatures have been bred to work. Choose your litter carefully they are popular with the pet trade and there is a lot of puppy farming.

Best of luck

Teckel - is the only way :tiphat:

I can see this degenerating into a lead v copper / my calibre rules kinda convo ...... wheres me popcorn
:)

When I used to do a lot of terrier work, there was always boys trying to re-invent the wheel. Border to a Parsons Russell, Nuttal line to a Middleton Lakeland, Patterdale to a Jagdt !! There are breeds out there bred for exactly the job you want them to do, so I would advise against a different breed and get one fit for purpose. Remember, you may own the bloody thing for 15+ years.

My employer here on this estate has 2 of them, wouldn't give either of them kennel room. Bark to make themselves heard, ballistic at horses or even worse at other dogs. Unseated one rider when her Ladyship neglected to put her "boys" on the lead, that took some smoothing over.
Totally ignore her and the boss but will listen to me. Told to go back into the house through the dog flap by me, they do but then bark fit to wake the dead when indoors.
Only plus point is they're unsteady to cats🤣her Ladyship has two and they're regularly exercised by her Schnauzers 👍 not all bad then, stops the cats catching songbirds around the big house.

They have a tendency towards gunshyness - much like airedales.
There is probably a reason why some breeds are preferred as gundogs.
Nothing success like success....

I’ve got an 11 month old schnauzer and he’s well socialised- no issues with other dogs and good recall. They do have a tendency to be vocal though which takes effort to train out and divert. Biggest issue for mine would be that he doesn’t like the sound of shots - think @Rafter is likely spot on

A no from me as well.
Can thoroughly recommend a Border terrier though. Mine was Ace, never barked unless working, excellent temperament, great with Kids and other dogs. A big dog in a small package.

I should have added, my late mother's one escaped and killed the next door's guinea pigs........she had minimal control over him and he was a right sod!
