Blaser R93 or Not ??

Eddie, given the state of your carcass, I doubt it's sale would cover the cost of the saddle mounts.....:lol:

You are going to struggle to pick up an R8 at anything other than dealer price. If you fish a round the various dealers, you can pick up R93 stocks and barrels SH without much trouble.

The Blaser really does travel well. Just had my 30/06 barrel threaded for an ASE to make it more useable in the UK.

I am a R93 professional owner, have been for about 3 years now. Mine is purely a stalking rifle, not an ornament, and has been dragged through assorts of muck, mainly in Scotland and it has never let me down on the hill no matter what the weather. No amount of rain or snow or very occasionally sunshine has tripped it up.

Being a Yorkshire man by birth, and living there for the first thirty years, made me baulk at the price, but having hummed and harred for quite a while I decided to stump up the cash. I did check the second hand prices before hand just in case I didn't get on with it.

I have had several other conventional rifles over the years but the Blaser suits me. I love the fact it is easily stripped to clean and always stays accurate after being put back together, it travels in a short case that isn't obviously a rifle case and apart from one very minor scratch on the stock it is still nearly as good as new, not a mark on the metal work.

I have had only one "misfire" if it can be called that and this was definitely pilot error. When at the range checking zero before going out, I have habitually over the years loaded two rounds and fired both off relatively quickly just to be sure. On this particular occasion I only loaded a single round and still tried to fire two. I went through the usual checks and waited before unloading and then wondered where the second round had gone, checked up the bore with the finger it see if it hadn't been ejected properly, couldn't find it anywhere. I decided at that point I was too tied to go out and went to the digs for a sleep. I had been at work all the pervious day and then driven up there over night before going to the range at first light. On the plus side I had a huge hind before the end of the weekend.

So all in all I am very fond of my Blaser. I don't think an R8 is on the cards for me as I am not sure it would benefit my shooting.

I did wonder why the local hospital declined my generous offer of my body for medical science, against an advance, I might add.
So I'm now inclined to believe it wasn't the money I asked for that put them off but the state of the goods on offer perhaps:D
The R8 does seem to be very highly priced, so I suppose they must have done their marketing homework to have arrived at that, I cannot see the product costing that much.
Oh well, I'll keep trying. I still have the Steyr to get by on until I find the right dealer.
 
I bought one of the first ones when they first came out. A bit cheaper than they are now. Ive never looked back, love the straight pull system, its brilliant if you go boar hunting as you can get shots off really quick. Accuracy superb, the only downside perhaps is the lack of removable magazine. you could consider the R98 if thats a concern??
 
Well that's it, I've finally gone and done it :)
I am now considerably poorer but am now the owner of a new 30-06 Blaser R93 in black with a grade four wooden stock, saddle mounts and a nice new 'posh' case to carry it it.
I spent most of this afternoon swopping backward and forwards between a Blaser and a Mauser Mo3, I just couldn't make up my mind.
The price was very similar and the wood was top class, I always find a nice bit of wood kills more Deer :D
Both were screw cut and both had short-ish barrels. The Mauser was much heavier than the Blaser so that probably helped me decide on the Blaser.
I have paid for it, now all I have to do is wait for my FC to come back with the relevent variation then go and collect it.
During the meantime, I used my modular Steyr this afternoon to drop a nice Roe Doe from among a group of five hiding in a hedgrow from a Pheasant shoot taking place two fields over from them.:cool:

My gunsmith has said If I want to drop my 'scope and some ammo off to him before my FC is through, he will zero it for me :) how about an offer like that :-D
 
Just had another 'play' with it at the gunsmiths today.
My FC has been renewed with the variation duly entered but my new FC is not valid until 4th January 2011 :roll:
So I dropped some bullets and my 'scope off with him, he is then going to mount the 'scope and zero it for me to collect on the 4th January.
I am off to Lithuania on the 5th January so am hoping to give it it's baptism of fire over there.
I shall have to play with it all day 4th January to get used to the straight pull thingy, otherwise I shall be cursing over the next few days.

I hope I don't meet any of the Guys that I've slagged off over the years for having a rifle called a Blower, or as the word is more commonly used by the lower classes, when referring to a Fart !!
When I think of all the slagging off I have done over the years I find it hard to believe I've been converted but it does have a lovely bit of wood and , as I've said before, that makes all the difference:D
 
Blimey............ I have read all 14 pages of this thread and inthe end it all comes down to user preference!!! Should've known really ;)

it must be nice for a man of your age to get wood! welcome to the club - at last!!
 
A young lady, in a nightclub, asked me once if I had wood ;) but I told her the food and drink is so expensive in here I've brought my own sandwiches and flask, pointing to my bulging pocket :D:lol:
Getting back to rifles, I must admit I like the look of a nice bit of wood, if the day turns into a blank, I can always sit and admire my wood, for me it's the equivilant to admiring a good picture.:-D
 
That is true you know...... some of the wood on these rifles is verrrryyyy sexxxxyyyyy........ Thing is though that I want to have a rifle in the field that won't make me cry if it comes into contact with barbed wire or granite or whatever. So as much as I like to admire a nice piece of wood I will probably confine that to the sculptures in my living room :D
 
I have Rem 700s, Mausers, Steyrs, a Weatherby Mk V etc. I bought my first Blaser two years ago. it was in .300 Win Mag Professional, and I had it fitted with a muzzle brake. It is a dream to shoot and the trigger is incredible; my wife can shoot it with ease. The brake makes it very noisy which is my only complaint; I would fit a Sound Moderator if they were legal but sadly there are not in Switzerland.

For my 40th birthday, I ordered a Luxus model in .308, with spare barrels in .243 and 9.3x62. The .308 is not quite 2 years old but I have put about 750 rounds through it. it has the Jagd Match barrel. It is my favourite stalking rifle and if I was forced to choose just one gun, my .308 would be the one.

I might get a new R8 as I like the idea of a detachable magazine. Be wary of shooting a Blaser, it can become an expensive habit!
 
I done the enquiry rounds on the blaser, the rifle I have always liked

Had some good and bad reviews from the people I spoke to and decided to go with the rifle make I have had no bad remarks about theMauser M03; have now ordered a Mo3 after having put a few rounds through one

The price of em, can't really afford to make a mistake
