Afternoon Everyone,

A few weeks away going to pick up a minter cz 527 varmint in 17 hornet,

Never had the caliber before or used it, whats it like as a caliber to use in the field? going to use it for static vermin shooting,

Sorry for starting another 17h thread didnt want to hijack someone elses thread though,

My local rfd I use gets in S&B 17 hornet factory and if memory serves its about £13 a box,
Has anyone ever tried the hornady 25gr hp factory ammo,

What do people zero theres for 1" high @ 100yd seems typical?

On the CZ 527 in terms of scope mounting does the 527 have an issue with low scope mounting and bolt clearance
or was this on early models, going to go with like a 4-16 mag range scope and a 40mm objective.

I've got a 527 17Hornet that I mainly use for long-range rabbits in the summer. Extremely accurate with factory ammo. I've also reloaded for it but it's a bit of a fiddle!

The thumbhole version that I've got is a very nice rifle to shoot, I've had a few foxes with it but limit it to 150 yards as you do get the odd "blow up" on them. Depending on the sort of range you will be shooting at, one inch high generally fills the bill. It's a flat shooting round and will drop rabbits out to 250 yards providing there isn't a howling gale. Not at all bad in normal wind conditions. It is a fun rifle to use particularly sitting out on a summers evening!

Much the same as old Keeper really, but ive an extended bolt , just to give a little more clearance on the scope, i use Hornady 20g v max, and its my rifle i go to every time im vermin shooting.

Cracking Caliber and Rifle.
I have just swapped my 4-16x50 Hawke Sidewinder for a Hawke Vantage 4-16x44 - much lighter scope, and got some new mounts to get it as low as possible.
Bolt clearance still fine. Standard bolt, but I think the older bolts were a bit of an issue, not the recent ones.
Reloading is well worth it I think. Works out at @ 47p per round (Bullet, Powder, Brass and Primer) using Nosler vermageddon 20gr, Viht N120 powder and standard CCI primers. Brass can be reloaded many times, so minimal cost concern.
An inch high at 100m will take you out to about 200m without having to aim off really.
Certainly not a Caliber for very windy days though. Just as Old Keeper said.
I am a big fan. Amazing on Rats, Rabbits (head shoot only) and crows/Pigeon.
Great on Fox at sensible ranges, but I find side on chest or a headshot preferable. Shot placement important!

I like my CZ 17Hornet, though I regard it as a more accurate/reliable 17HMR on steroids. In other words it will certainly kill foxes cleanly (so long as your shot placement is good and you don’t stretch range) but it wouldn’t be my first choice for a dedicated foxing rifle.

The factory Hornady 20gr Vmax is good, though I reload 25gr Vmax and get very good velocities that ballistically out perform it and probably hit a bit harder on fox.

If you choose to use S&B factory, keep the brass and reload it or sell it; I think it’s good stuff.

Went as low as possible on mine and just modified the bolt to suit.
Polished after machining and functional now.
