300 Norma Magnum

Was wondering if anybody is using this caliber for ELR shooting or for large game and long range hunting. It's absolutely amazing ballistics better a 338 Lapua Magnum and with a muzzle brake the recoil is pretty much reduced. Will shoot very nicely a 215 to 230 grain at bullet at 3000fps out to a mile so very versatile. Used extensively in Nordic regions for hunting and was chosen as US SOCOM long range sniper round 3 years ago.

Superceded by 300PRC. Issues with case capacity causing inconsistencies in firing pressures, especially on incline I gather.

Thomas Haugland used one for a while on his THLR YouTube videos. I may give it a go in the future when the 338 barrel is toast. Ed Bewsher from Edinbugh Rifles has one currently

He has, I built it and it shoots “quite adequately” considering it’s basically a rechambered Sako 308 barrel (on a TRG42)

Well from the groups I’ve seen from feedback the rifle should hold sub 4” at 600 metres, so good for the stalking test and a few other things too

Why such a big cartridge? You need to be dedicated to a cartridge like that. They can be demanding with regards to reloading. The local gun shops are festooned with 2nd hand 300 Ultra Mags and 300 RUM's that people traded in because they really didn't think the initial purchase through. ~Muir

Like the 7x61 Sharpe and Hart it's a cartridge that regardless of its merits is a "boutique" cartridge. It'll be another companion for those Ultra Magnums that MUIR mentions.

Yes at over 2000 yards the 300prc seems to have an edge but 300 Norma has better ballistics before that .As for case capacity my fill ratio is over 90% so really no issues at all on inclines. Another plus is that lapua brass is readily available for this caliber .

Boils down to what you shoot and at what distance really.

I have indeed.

The PRC is a misnomer in my opinion
It exists to compete on a standard Magnum bolt face and mag systems but offers no advantage

Had a few magnums and the 300nm was one on my bucket list

It does everything I was unable to get out of the 300wm and I am only running a 1:10” twist
I can only imagine what a faster twist with access to 220-230gr would be like!

200gr at 32-3300fps is extremely effective!

I have not actually developed a load. Just chucked together some plinking rounds referencing quickload
They shot remarkably well at 100
They seem to shoot even better at 4-500

I shot a 2” group at 466yds

Although I didn’t do it justice today at 575 with gusty conditions!

I wanted a cartridge that carries significantly more energy at distances of 300-500 for a specific job
On paper the load I have produces more energy at 500 than a .270 130gr at the muzzle...

i used to have one when i lived in South Africa i only used it with 180 gr nosler partition or even better the RWS Hmantel it was devastating

Yes.

I’ve shot this gun, and was very pleasantly surprised.

I’m usually a large calibre sceptic, and self confessed recoil pansy. But this was no worse to shoot than an unmoderated .270.

In a gun and configuration I’d never used, set up for someone built like a rubber orangutan, I was easily able to shoot sub moa at about 250m.
