Well I hope no armed response team turns up here if a shot is heard! It'll either be me doing home slaughter with the 410 (beef? lamb? pork? - spoiled for choice!) or one of us checking zero or shooting a deer or fox - on our own land. No rules broken.
 
It might be safe. You might be alone. It might be your exercise. It might be putting food on the table (so a sort of shopping). But realistically it isn't necessary. So go ahead if you think it's okay. But don't go posting on here when the cops, who will want to make an example of someone, pick you. You can have a nice argument in court and be a nice item on the evening news. Maybe you'll win too.
 
My biggest landowner informed me today that all stalking on their land is to be suspended. They have had the police around today for different reasons and was told that if a vehicle was stopped and it had firearms for foxing or deerstalking they will be seized as its classed as no essential. I value my certificate so that's me not risking it .

Irrespective of opinion! Anyone who gets caught out shooting/stalking please let us know if the authorities slap your wrist or revoke your license?

Still think the idea of calling 101 and booking in will put you in good stead if you get stopped, or tell you not to go out in the first place.......

What example are we providing, to the non-shooting general public, if we continue to go out?

Not convinced....ok a scenario.

You go out stalking, you get injured, you call the thinly stretched emergency services for help!
That is a lot of essential people distracted by someone undertaking a non-essential activity.

Not convinced, here is a possible newspaper headline!
WW2 Pensioner dies because emergency medical personnel were answering a medical emergency for someone out shooting.

Just how damaging would this be to the shooting fraternity when we emerge from CV?
Just how selfish and stupid do the adults in the room look now?

If more examples are needed, I'll defer to others as more examples should not be needed!



We should be sitting tight and focusing on and posting images of that long-overdue gun maintenance, or home loading that long-overdue ammunition, etc.

You make a valid point the roads round here are full and I mean full of cyclists I wonder what would happen if they take a tumble and then need hospital attention.

I agree with you. And I will follow the rules. And professional workers who cannot work from home are an exception. I have total admiration for NHS staff, supermarket staff, petrol station staff etc who are still out there keeping limited resource moving.

But my friendly point of debate on private stalking at home on a farm, was walking out my back door circa 700m on my own land for deer management or recreation (whatever you want to call it) not passing anyone is my business.

I certainly ain’t going to ring up the police firearms dept and say “by the way we aren’t shooting any more“ I suspect they have bigger fish to fry! I regard it as unnecessary. Its like ringing them before a weekend on the lash and saying I’m gonna get really pished but it’s ok I won’t take my guns out the cabinet.

Stay safe folk and let common sense prevail.
 
Rather than spend all this time working out how you can legitimise continuing to enjoy your hobby while less fortunate folks either die or risk their health caring for dying people, why not do something a bit more useful like sign up for the NHS volunteer army instead?

After my initial post, at 09.30 this morning, just an update on the general view and opinions gathered today from friends, shooting contacts and online, if we can or can't stalk and can or cannot travel to a stalking site. My own position has shifted somewhat (hardened, towards NOT going out shooting..) after many wise words by acquaintances.

1. NO if it involves travelling by car.
2. NO if it involves a public access site ( too many families and kids out..)
3. NO if it involves meeting up with guides/agents/landowners/estate workers/fellow stalkers/syndicate members
4. YES if you can WALK to your land on your own; or live on the site so don't have to travel over public roads; and you are a professional doing essential deer culling for crop protection, and only if it is privately owned and sufficiently remote/inaccessible to have little public footfall. So that excludes most of us, including myself.

The other issue is one of social control/ social acceptability. Even if it would be SAFE to go out on your site, that doesn't make it socially acceptable to other people in your area.

These are just VIEWS, not any official guidance.

There is also lots of chatter that FAC/SGC will be revoked if you're out shooting and get caught as it is classed as 'non-essential'.

Therefore my own conclusion now is to wait for some clarity and more guidance from the Police, BASC and other shooting organisations, and accept that in the next few weeks I now have to clean my rifles as I have no excuse not to.

Please advice - can somebody please tell me how to do that? In 20 secs, with hot water and soap?

What about helping out on a farm with lambing and happening to have a rifle incase you bump in to a deer or fox? Genuine question
