Maximum Range for Stalking

I'm sure this thread is going to get a million different views ranging from "if you can do it then crack on" to "outrageous - shouldnt ever be done".

The fact is that the head and neck are the most mobile part of a deer, and are small targets compared to the chest area. You're increasing your risks of a wounded deer taking head/neck shots, and then increasing them again by pushing the range out.

I would suggest that someone consistently taking longer range (lets say 200y and up) head/neck shots at deer will lose or miss more beasts on average over time than someone who aims to get under 200y engine room shots.

Personally the longest shot I've ever taken is about 250y, in general I aim to get under 200y and prefer engine room shots.
Not as yet.... Just saying lol. Its also the same for every other animal, always moving, heads/necks... This doesn't just apply to deer but people seem to miss that. Go onto the aussie/nz forums, with respect, if you can reliably and consistently then whys it a bad idea

So I made a clean shot at range, NO DRAMAS, Nothing Illegal , doing my job .
I posted about bullet retention not making an issue about how this shot was taken, no other info, NOT EVEN ON THIS SITE.
and you all have something to say.

Just to add IT WAS NOT 420m it was 420yrds , that is almost 100yrds a difference.

Kinda tells you more about you than me I think

Head or neck shots unfortunately are not a case of hit or miss ,seen too many lower jaws destroyed and shots that
have passed through the neck without hitting the spinal cord the result in both cases is a lingering death
I agree 100% and as I have said many times this is not a normal every day shot for me either , if it was much further it would definately not be tried, if it was windy again I would never have tried it and it was a risk either way lbut that can be said anytime you squeeze the trigger

I’m guessing he won’t be posting ( or boasting )on the net again to his many followers any time soon .😏
I wasnt boasting , I was showing bullet retention .

Is this stalking police ? because I can tell you some very cracking stories if we want to put a few people down on their shooting activities and I bet many on here can do the same about other members on this forum, but , I am not like that

Well gentlemen .

First of all yes it was me and Marcus has voiced his opinion .

First of all I was NOT stalking I was Culling. When a beast is lying in a large unstalkable clearfell nipping the tops off a fresh replant then sometimes a shot a little longer than the usual is needed .

The deer would have ripped up a lot of plants and had already done so.

The conditions were perfect and the I had plenty of time to dial in to get it done. Its not the norm . All I could see was its head and neck . If I had missed then the worse that would happen is I would scare the deer off the replant either way job done.

The post was about bullet retention not the shot . The range was only mentioned because of how well the bullet held up.

As I said it was NOT stalkable and frankly too dangerous to take a rifle into, second of all it took 2 hours of hard dragging to get it out and the least amount of equipment taken in there the better.

You may think its unacceptable to shoot past 100m but I have seen guys all over here and social media shooting foces at 400yrds now whole fox is the size of a stags head.

Another point this shot was not done recently .

You say "that all you could see was head and neck. If you missed they would run away. Worst that could happen".
What if you only hit soft tissue?
Good luck finding the stag running away with bullet through throat area. 🤔

I agree , chance I took, but that was my decision , like many on here have made similar mistakes at 80m . it can happen at any range

I didn’t think the 101 call was any defence to go out or am I wrong in this .Basc is trying to get an answer out of Police for some sort of unity across the counties as to what’s ok and what’s not apparently .Plenty of lads been told to stay in regardless of lamb deaths .Might be different in Scotland though .

This isn't "Slaughtering Directory" so it’s a little brutal reading people slaughtering Tulloch, the guys entitled to his own opinion on ethics and what range he deems to be appropriate or reasonable. If the entire world conformed to one social norm, we would have a lot less to talk about. Some people should learn to respect other opinions, regardless of their personal standpoint. Remember, we cant all be right... That's why we have wives. Be kind.

Anyway back on track now the SD massive have had the fill of bloodlust ,
Bullets Yeh they are funny things and more interesting than how this post has developed but this is SD lol ? .
Understanding how they work or don't work or even if they are reported to be the best in the world , knowing and seeing is the part that matters and then there's the One Mil $ Q' , should I drive them fast or slow them down ! they are bug holes at 100 but is the down range reaction what I expected of said bullet ? if not why not I wonder I wonder , is't shooting a mine field of Fun .
