Ever had a rifle or calibre you just don't get on with?

17 HMR,s inherently are far less prone to ricochets for 3 reasons, most shoot 17 grain ballistic tips and the come apart fast on hitting anything, second they are lighter than 22 rounds and lastly travelling at near twice the speed. its a great round for vermin and target work, ammo easy to source and relatively cheap. I accept the 22 has stood the test of time and lots of guys love them but the 17 is more versatile with little hold over/under required, great round

Yip ! The .340 Weatherby Mag . . A nightmare of a calibre !!!! . . Kicked like a mule worse than a .375 and didn’t kill any better than a .300 win mag ! . . Ammo was horrendously expensive and wasn’t even legal for much above Eland unless you went to CAR or Cameroon . . Believe me and try it for yourself there’s not much in the way of plains game and deer a .270win with 130gr Nosler partition bullets won’t take effectively !

Anything I owned with Steyr written on it. Had a Varmint SL in 222 trigger awful, magazine wouldn't rotate and on ejecting cases it would dent the necks into a "D" shape. Classic half-stock in 6.5x55 could not get better than 1.5 MOA with any factory or handloaded ammo, despite having a half MOA test card, (someone in the factory with a hole punch) the ancient well worn Sako L61 it replaced could hold half MOA. I still hadn't learned my lesson as when a bargain deal on SSG69 P2 308 with Kahles 6x42 sling, mounts and a hard case for a grand came along I was suckered in. To be fair this one was actually accurate, but brittle, the plastic mag well shattered after just 50 rounds.

Ah, I'm considering swapping out from .22 to .17, is that a bad idear? What problems have you experienced with it? My patch is fairly near to the village and is spotted about with the odd cottage, which limits the safe shooting lanes etc. I sometimes hear the .22 ricochet, which makes me pretty nervous. I've heard the .17 doesn't rick as much.
Sorry mate I got tied up in a another thread over the last couple of days ,

Three problems I have found with the .17hmr,

1, the wind is a major problem it is just really fickle in it and really hard to judge.
2. Flyers are more common and wheen I say flyers I mean 3 or 4 inches off.
3. I don't like how the cases split and I have found the ones that are flyers are the ones where the cases slip
4. getting used to using them through the ranges are a bit of a challenge but tbf I have not messed with one since I was younger and I did not like them back then either.

shame they are so bad in the wind

Tikka T3 in 5.56 - I thought it would be the perfect muntjac calibre. Would have been better if I'd had a short action rifle such as a remington. Anyway, we got permission to shoot the roe on the ground so the 5.56 became superfluous. I'd love another try or a .222 - ideally in a sako but they don't make the small actions in lefty

Yep I had a 270, I somehow thought it would be a game changer from the 243, god how wrong was I! in the end I hated it, got it rebarelled chambered into 2506 and never looked back.

CZ do.

David.

The only rifle I did not get on with was the SLR I was issued with back in 1976

7.62 SLR's came in 3 sizes (in terms of LOP) I got the larger size - obviously - as I was, and am 5' 4"

All kit issuers have a nasty sense of humour

I will also NEVER buy another Howa

Tulloch,

What's your bad experience of Howa? I've had a 223 in standard sporter for 8 years and put a lot of rounds through it. I do have occasional issues with cases jamming (more my poor cleaning I think) but it's the most accurate rifle I have. The stock is crap and the trigger feels cheap, but it's a shooter.

I was looking at getting one in 243. Any info would be useful.

I bought a new Winchester 357 lever action and I just didn’t like it, I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. I sold and bought a Marlin limited cowboy in 44mag and never looked back.

Around 10 years ago I bought a Savage 10 .243. It had the AccuStock, 22” barrel and hinged floorplate. The first ammunition I tried in it was Hornady Superperformance 58 grain V-Max. It was phenomenally accurate, .25-.50 MOA and I had zero problems with it. Kept it for a few months and sold it, the reason being I prefer a 24” barrel on a .243 and I think Savages are butt ugly. Replaced it with a Weatherby Vanguard S2 which while not as accurate as the Savage comes close.

It took a couple of years for me to admit to myself how stupid I was to get rid of the Savage. If the situation arises again I’ll spend more time learning to accept that accuracy trumps barrel length(velocity) and looks.

Had a Hatson pump action shotgun that just didn't suit me at all. Was my worse decision to purchase it. Luckily i sold it for not much less than i got it for.

Time for a bit of flat earther controversy/wind up!

I come from a very traditional Idaho family (although I've adopted Britain as home and am a British citizen) filled with veterans of both WW2 and Vietnam. There is a definite attitude in the family that favours traditional American makers (in guns and scopes) and calibres ...

So here comes the controversial bit! I wouldn't shoot a metric calibre. The Metric System is a Franco European plot to undermine the intellectual verility of the anglosphere.

Nor would I buy a rifle made in a former Axis power. Quoting my father, word for word, "your great Uncle Merrell didn't fight his way across Europe for the right to buy a German scope or gun". :british:

I say I'm joking ... but I've actually only ever owned Remingtons (and one Marlin and one Savage) and the calibres I've owned are: 30-30, 308, 30-06, .300win, .375 and .458. Hmmmm ...

Hang on while I get some popcorn ...

.30-06 Oh wait a minute don't you mean 7.62x63mm ?
.308 a sort of commercial copy of 7.62x51mm.
