Sako85 carbon wolf barrel pitted and machine marks evident after borescoping. Just over 2years old. What to do.?!

Looks fine to me as a hunting rifle. Pitting and or rust may not necessarily affect accuracy much. If you are expecting benchrest accuracy using a sporting rifle with factory ammo then you are asking too much.
Pitting in this case is affecting accuracy. Should be more consistent. I know it’s a hunting rifle but still expect better quality from a rifle in that price range.

If there 1" squares then that's not to bad. I've 3 sako85s and a 75. They have always been top class quality. Never let me down. What has caused the pitting?
Don’t know what has caused the pitting. Always cleaned before and after use. Moderator never left on. Stored in a clean dry cabinet. Can’t understand it. Really disappointed in the built quality of the barrel. Seen many machine marks on the inside of the barrel whilst scoping also.
I have had 3 Sako 85s have had bedding issues with two. Have had tikkas and used 75s also. Loved them but now my opinion and view has drastically changed.

Hope it gets sorted. Got a sako85 blackwolf myself.

Pitting is so bad in my BSA .222 that it lacks most of its rifling in the middle third of the barrel from decades of non-cleaning as the previous user couldn't remove the bolt. I used to JB bore cleaning compound to get most of the muck out and now, despite the terrible pitting, it shoots about the same as your 140 grain test group. So if you haven't already tried it, have a go: JB Bore Cleaning Compound – 1967spud Reloading Supplies Ltd.

Think I will cut my loses and rebarrel. Rather just bite the bullet and get it rebarrel in a barrel that will shoot consistently.
As edi, has said earlier no point in flogging a dead horse.

Just wondering has anybody dealt with Sako on an issue like this.?!
Thanks all for
Your replies, much appreciated. Maybe this thread will outline some issues with this model 85 for others.

A mates son had a similar Sako 85, also a .270. He had it for a year when the accuracy dropped off for no reason. He had used it quite a lot, but even so, the barrel looked like it was twenty seasons in not one.
Dealer sent it back and it was eventually replaced, but it took months, and no explanation from Sako. Not what you expect from a quality manufacturer.

Shooting off bags,
Bipod and bags. Every scenario. Nothing bring consistency. Can shoot better groups with my Sako quad .17hmr.

Same issue here consistency was never there but has really dropped off now. I have really tested it out to the max with the virus and having the time to do so.
I have used this rifle but definitely used it but didn’t abuse it. Regularly cleaned and well looked after. Never had any problems like this with any of the rifles I have owned.
Tried cleaning. Not cleaning. Mod on/off.
spent so much money on ammo.
Might ring gmk in the morn or directly contact Sako.
The only thing, I am down to One stalking rifle at the Minute thought this rifle was a rifle for life.
So Sold my carbonlight .243 after buying the .270. I expected much better from such a renowned premium brand.
Especially with the cost of the rifle you expect results that I have not gotten.
Very disappointed to say the least.

My barrel also looks like it’s done twenty seasons and has only done 1 full season and 2 months of the first season I got it. 😬😩
Disappointing considering my fathers in laws Sako 75 in .270 was 15/20 years old and still looked like new when He sold it this year. Quality not there anymore.

🤣🤣
Definitely not the same quality as was in the older Sakos. That’s For sure. An old Sako like a 75, was a rifle for life. The same can’t be said these days, the 85 does not live upto the sakos of the past, in my opinion. Once bitten, twice shy... 😬

Not quite true, we have an old Bofors steel Sako L579 in 308 in the family that had a bad barrel from day one. Never shot well. The saga ended abruptly with a new Lothar Walther barrel.... all of a sudden the rifle was very easy to shoot, would all of a sudden shoot almost any ammo... shooting great since over ten years.
If you read enough on forums you will notice every rifle manufacturer has issues or bad barrels every now and then. Not unusual. Just if that happens be happy to have a rifle that can easily be re-barrelled. Recon the 270 will turn into a great shooter with a good barrel however one should also be realistic..... if one can repeat 3/4" groups mostly with the odd 1/2" group in-between one should be happy and go hunting.

Thanks again for the great words edi.
They all have their problems.
I understand like all rifles and manufacturers there are bound to be the odd one that slips through the net for whatever reason. That does not do exactly what it is suppose to. I am not expecting perfection.
just disappointed in this rifle.
I am sure with the new barrel it will be what I expected and more.
To have confidence for me in a setup that is consistent, not like right now, is what I am striving for.
This will make for happy hunting in the future I am sure.
thanks edi

I see you are from Wexford, did you ever talk to Dom Byrne Custom Rifles about this rifle? He is very good and experienced with 270win also fits plenty barrels on Sako/Tikka rifles. We work with Dom quite a bit.
I just have a 270 Sako Carbolite here to get bedded, I never understood why they don't do the last step and bed the action from factory. Schultz & Larsen does, Heym does.

Yes Dom does all my work, he is going to rebarrel it for me in the next few weeks.
Had him bed it for me before.
Very experienced and a gent to deal with. Can’t get my head around their new recoil and bedding strategy either. Would save so many issues down the line, like you say if they done it in house/factory bedded as standard like other manufacturers.
I Have one of your stocks on my semi custom .204 Dominic built. Excellent stock, superb craftsmanship and a pleasure to use. Makes me smile picking it up, and it’s a joy to shoot. Thanks again.
