Pulsar axion xm22 vs xm30

Hi all,

about to pull the trigger on a thermal. I’ve been pretty sold on the xm30 key. But I’ve now seen that the xm22 has a wider field of view which is desirable. But doesn’t have a focusable objective lens which in my mind probably means I’m not interested. Thought I’d see if any of you chaps had experience with both that you could feed back? Should the no focusable objective mean I shouldnt consider the 22? 300 difference between them sure would buy me a nice knife.......

cheers

I have the same dilemma! I have not used the xm22 key but have used and liked the XM30 key for a week of roe stalking. It was great, but i never once needed to adjust the focus!

A mate has just ordered the 22 and had the same dilemma as you........has to wait for delivery so unable to add a user experience yet but would love to know. more for rabbits and pest control rather than deer so the larger field of view at shorter distance was the selling point for him.

I borrowed a XM22 and had a play with it. I liked the size and weight of the unit and the overall performance was ok for the money, but I didn't like the fact that you couldn't focus the objective lens, just didn't feel right. Fair enough, I was just looking at heat 'blobs' in many cases, but out of focus blobs offended me! So I am now looking at an Axion Key XM30 instead. That said, I think it will be a very personal thing.

Thanks for the feedback all, my gut feeling says go for the xm30, as id be gutted if I got the 22 but needed to adjust the objective for maximum clarity but couldn't. The only downside is the field of view, which naturally id prefer bigger, but at this price point I'm fully aware I can't have it all.

Cheers all for the help

I have a XM30 Key and use it regularly and for the money I think it’s very good. I had a shot of the 22 model but don’t think it’s as good. Being able to focus does make a difference IMO

Cheers

There is no advantage in the xm30 I think personally the xm22 is perfect. Main difference is xm 30 connects to your phone focus is not an issue you can adjust eyepiece in Xm22 anyway

I've been using the key30 for a few weeks now and we'll pleased with it. Mainly used for vermin control. No problem to I'd fox at well over 300yds...just watch the movement and easy to make out if it's rabbit, hare or fox, muntjac stand out a mile. It will show heat source a lot further but so long as I can I'd a fox at over 300 I'm happy..

Hi folks interested in this thread as I have come across a dealer selling xm22 with £60 of free portable power accessories. Very, very tempted but is the xm30key worth the extra £££

where are all the xm22 users?...

Yes it is with the extra money. Yes it’s a lot more money but the quality is far better. I would suggest you will regret buying the XM22

Just back in from my first sit out with my new xm30 key - fantastic, walking into the seat I spotted 3 roe that I would never have seen without it!

The only issue is you see them in the long grass with the thermal but can’t find them with the binos when you switch!

I was spotting roe very clearly at 800 yards as they stick out like a sore thumb!

Gixer

I bought th xm22 from macleod's early this year. Only used a friend's spotter once before so had little to compare to. I have used it extensively for spotting reds on open ground and emerging from forestry, spotting roe on similar ground and on clear fell and forestry blocks and foxes among long grass and arable cover. It does exactly what I need it to do and can't see the need to 'upgrade' any time soon. Where an adjustable focus would have been handy is in misty/foggy conditions where deer-shaped stumps warmed during the day can be picked up on the thermal but difficult to spot properly with binoculars. A more accurate focus might provide a bit more definition and help discount them quicker. I think the screen on the xm30 is possibly better resolution, which could help too.

The extra power accessories offered sound like a reasonable deal, having recently bought a second battery and twin charger myself so I'm covered for a full day hunting.

Anyone in the Westhill/Banchory area of Aberdeenshire who want to have a look at/through the unit are welcome to pop me a message if it helps them make a decision either way.
