I've decided to replace my crashed Vitara with van. I need a 4x4 pickup really, paired with a trailer, but in current circumstances and a 5K budget I can't afford that. Even without the trailer that figure doesn't get near a light use, low miles pickup and with a trailer it'll be an old high mileage dog, so I'm hanging fire and going back to a van for the next year or so.

Don't want a big Trannie size panel van, more a medium, probably one of the new breed of 1.6 engines as I don't pull the loads I used to. A lowish miles (under 80,000) new-shape Expert/Dispatch would be ideal but they really start at about 6K+. Ruled out a standard Kangoo because it's just too small. The 1.3 V. Combo was just too gutless. LWB Fiat Doblo might be OK. Bigger than the Kangoo Maxi with a higher payload but I'm dubious about build quality.

At the moment I'm leaning towards a Nissan NV200 but don't know much about them. Got to buy something next week. Any ideas?

Had a Renault Trafic (same van, different badge). Liked it but know of just too many gearbox transmission problems. Pity, SWB Trafics/Vivaros etc are a very useful size and shape.
 
Merc Vito I’ve got one 200.000 on the clock still runs perfectly well tows large trailer and very comfy for 3,4 hour trips no cam belts to worry about and now there’s a new model out old shapes are even cheaper my merc before did 350.000 miles sprinter just rust started to appear so sold it to a delivery driver who had it for a long time as well 5grand should get you a decent one check them out you’ll be suprized
 
Am currently running a 2006 Peugeot Partner van bought 5 years ago for £600ish, do about 5K a year and apart from 4 new tyres (£80) it has never seen a spanner and provides cheap and trouble free motoring. It replaced a similar Citroen Berlingo that again had run and run.
 
I had a Partner before the Vitara. Good van. Killed mine from hard use at 180,000 - just too many things collapsed at once. But until that point it was absolutely rock solid reliable and never use a drop of oil.
It's old but trusted technology and I'd have another like a shot only it is just too small.

I had a Vito twenty years ago, W reg, and had terrible trouble with the transmission. It ate drive shafts. I gather they solved that early problem but I'm not sure when. Which years are safe to go for.
 
Finch, it was a similar end for my Berlingo when tragedy struck, I sensed loads of things were about to die so it had to go. P'exed for an 02 Vauxhall Brava aka Bravo two zero aka the white knight which is still going strong.
 
Think it depends how they are installed?
Think some can be installed throu ECU or wot ever so re mapping job, but others can be add ons.
Or so I was told.

Think it was my ex post van was limited, ended up just leaving it not a fast driver anyway.
But bloody annoying trying to overtake some ****s on Mwy doing 65 that then speed up to 72 and then drop down again. Esp when they hog the middle lane.
 
I have my late Wifes RAV4 4wd 08 Plate for sale if you are interested no MOT been laid up for a while a great car with a tow bar drives well.
 
Going to look at an NV200 tomorrow. Over budget for the year but one owner and very low miles (12 plate, 42K)
I can get any speed limiters taken off locally.

I had a Vivaro, had the gearbox rebuilt, only lasred 2 years. Apparently the 6th gear is on top of the 'box' and doesn't get any oil until you drive at app 60 mph. So we all economise by driving in 6th, and burning out the gearbox.
I now drive a Nissan, same as, but drive mostly in 5th, so far, so good.
