£3,500 for a mongrel?

I went to buy a stainless table yesterday and the seller had a six month old Cockapoo that he had paid the above sum for. No papers or health checks and he said he had been offered nearly £5,000 from someone on the original waiting list.
I paid under a grand for what is the best mating so far in the UK of pure bred Chessies which both parents under went eight pre mating tests and i under went the 3rd degree to be considered a potential owner..... are good breeders being made to look foolish here?

Worlds gone mad. There might be a short term blip in prices. But I can see an awful lot of dumped dogs in the future. Either through charities or literally.
If you wanted much more than £500 for a Spaniel it would have to be very very good.

It’s getting ridiculous but as I said in a previous post - whilst people are stupid enough to pay exorbitant prices breeders will continue laughing.

My mongrel - lab springer cross (accidental nip of the estate dogs ). He’s no looker but great natured, works well for my needs & loyal to the bone..... £185 to cover the initial vet costs & a wee bit of incidentals! Wouldn’t part with him for any of the daft sums getting paid

Pup prices have gone nuts during lockdown as people furloughed or working from home have had time on their hands. Have seen litters of lambs and cockers at £3000 per pup.
Sadly many may up being neglected as owners get back to work.

If people are daft enough to pay that amount leave them to it !
As said before greedy breeders will try and maximise the profit.
Sensible breeders will probably hold back a breeding or only sell to like minded sensible shooting people I hope !

i just hope that they get some of the cockers labs etc well trained to the gun before they dump them off at a charity so that I can pick one up fully trained for a small donation

Lot of dumped dogs now. We had a pure bred Siberian Husky turn up outside our yard abroad last autumn. Very young, very lovely, untrained and clueless, very lost, just dumped at the end of the summer by her puppy-hood owners. She's really blossomed, gamey and attentive, will swim around the forest pools looking for ducks and will pick and carry hedgehogs soft mouth. Steals sweets from the local kids and brings and caches them in the yard, making a great companion / watch dog, wish I could be there more for her.

All the new mongrel/mixed breeds are going crazy, people just add either half of two breed names and then slap a 2k price on them, no thought for health and future breed and half of them are nut jobs, the fad for French bulldogs is also ridiculous, most I’ve seen have been badly behaved lunatics of dogs!

It's amazing that people are getting two different breed pedigree dogs, mating them and then selling them for more than a pedigree with all the tests and history would be. Just mix the two names up, the more random the breeds the better and the more it'll be.

People are idiots to pay that for an unproven mongrel. Without some history of breeds you can't guarantee you'll get the best traits of two dogs rather than the worst. It took about 50 generations of selective breeding of silver foxes to guarantee the traits they were looking for so just mixing two completely opposite breeds together you have no solid clue as to how they will turn out.

I also much regret the reduction in size from the normal breed purpose. Its a hell of a job to find a big Ridgeback these days, thanks to those nut cases at the Kennel Club.

Yes, the KC has ruined many a breed since the end of the war... and Crufts has a lot to answer for. Labs with 20" legs and flat faced dogs that cant breathe.

It is indeed a concern.

For what it is worth, I have a neighbour who purchased two "cocappoos" for, I'm guessing, loads of money, who hires the local tennis court so that she can run them around without them getting grubby,(not picking up) or outsources the thing to the dog walking service, who will pick them up in their vans and return them after whatever, wherever. Semi feral yes. Socialised certainly not, quite the opposite I think. Yappy horrid things.

Then there was the acquaintance who thought that he could save his marriage by purchasing two "Labradoodles".to curry favour with his distant children, and relatives. Never having previously shown any interest nor competence in dog ownership before.

I did suggest that naming them Tristram and Isolde might not be the smartest choice, for practical reasons, such as trying to call them back from uncontrolled mayhem around North Norfolk.

Actually they seemed to be nice sweet creatures,, and learned some lessons about obedience from my dog, who "nipped them into shape" as best he could, Didn't take long.. In retrospect it mostly turned out well. I think. But have lost contact.

It's gone nuts. I bought our little pup, a pedigree cocker from working strain, right at the start of lockdown for £1000. The same dealer called me back several weeks later saying that a customer wanted to offer £3,000 for our lad and would I be interested. I told him to pass on the message to the twit with the bundle of cash to go and procreate with himself. I don't really blame the breeders as they're just satisfying demand, and presently, demand has never been higher it seems than during lockdown and still is in fact. We got in just at the right time!

Having just had a litter of nine pedigree choc labs am fed up with people wanting a pup and then cancelling a few days later, 3 of the 9 are going to pure shooting households and have charged a lot less for them. The others are going for well under the 2000+ mark that others are charging, still have one male left which my son was having but now the pubs are open again tells me will not have time for it!!!.

As someone looking for a dog, it really is very clear that the prices for pups appear to have gone completely mental since the start of lock down. I'm guessing there are punters happy to pay those prices. I'll however sit back and await the inevitable price crash and return to sensible prices.

I'm guessing we'll start seeing the great rehousing of lock down puppies from September onwards. It will be interesting to see whether those who have paid £2-3k plus or whatever for a nondescript dog with no pedigree will understand that any second hand value is a fraction of that (if even that).

You have to feel for the dogs though in all this.

My oldest sister used to breed Cockers. They were nothing more than pampered pooches so we were always at loggerheads as I would constantly tell her she had a darned cheek entering them in the Gun Dog Class at shows when they had never ever seen or heard a shotgun!
