A good family vehicle that tows well

How much towing capacity? I run a VW Tiguan, 184 hp, DSG Auto and all wheel drive. 2200kg towing capacity. Decent rubber and it will do all most people need, comfortable cruiser , reasonably capable off road, but no Landie or Jimny!

EDIT - I didn't read that you want a 3 tonne towing capacity

I have been thinking similar myself. I don’t actually need a pickup. So when my trooper dies it will probably be replaced with either a Touareg or an Audi Q7. The Audi is the one I would prefer Because with the seats down it would be a massive boot, but like everything it is money dependant.

New Mitsubishi Shogun Sport, can tow over 3 tonnes, 2WD High, 4WD High (including on tarmac) 4 WD low range and rear dif lock. It is not over large.

The Audi, the Touareg and the Cayenne all share the same platform but the Q7 is longer than the other the other two (same sub-frames bolted to a longer bodyshell). As such, the steering geometry changes for the Q7 and they have a reputation for eating front tyres.

Yup thinking Land Cruiser, but whats the views on the one now imported with the 34D engine. I think its the same as the Corado in other markets. Toureg or Q7 may be an option.

Friends have a New Defender and they are very happy with and have done some long continental trips in it. May be an option once we start them coming onto 2nd hand market and/or commercial one becomes available.

Towing - i have a boat with trailer which meeds a 3 tonne capacity, and yes the idea of a cheap old 4x4 is good but parking (on street) is a major issue.

Will always have a soft spot for the Nissan Terrano and do miss mine. A late plate low mileage one would definitely be worth a look. Mine was an old plate and age got the better of it. Very capable machine though.

One I always considered at the time but have no experience of is the Hyundai Terracan.
I bought a Terracan new, had it 11 years then sold it on for a song at 250,000 kms to my farmer neighbour who is still very happy with it 4 years later. 350 kms in it though and my back would hurt, they were built up to land cruiser standards to get their firm a good rep on world markets.
Q7 & Touareg are built on the same line in Bratislava btw. Same underbody platform.

Current Landcruisers have the 2.8litre D4D, while older models have the 3 litre D4D
The 2.8 is Euro 6 so you have to pee in the Adblue tank now and again !!
I believe the engines changed in 2015 (I have a September 2015 landcruiser with the 2,8 engine)
I previously had a 2005 landcruiser with the 3 litre engine.
The 2.8 engine is smoother, and more fuel efficient (although that's helped by an auto box with an extra gear)
However, the vehicle does feel a wee bit more sluggish than the older model.
Comfort wise, it's not a Range Rover, but anyone who has endured a long journey as a rear seat passenger in a Discovery will find that a long journey as a rear seat passenger in a landcruiser will not require the usual trip to the osteopath afterwards
The big factor of course is that (unlike owners of anything made by land Rover) you can sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that it won't break down

Cheers

Diesel Cayenne or Landcruiser would be my considerations if pickup is not on the agenda

If your doing a lot of towing and want to hardly notice the weight on the back the 4.5 litre landcruiser amazon is the daddy. We have a 2014 amazon. Cost a fortune but saw it as a investment for the next 10 years till my dad retires. My brother and I run toyota hilux invincible 2012 reg, mine manual his auto.
The auto is no worse on fuel and better for long journeys. If your wanting an automatic I would get a hydraulic style transmission rather than DSG etc. I personally dont think towing large weights would do them much good.

A lot of vehicles seem to have small oil coolers for the auto box. So if you are towing a lot I would recommend doing a bit of research on the model and seeing if the cooler is big enough. I just added an extra cooler to my old trooper for that very reason to stop it from overheating as mine has a single rad.

Driven the Terracan on a farm, off road almost all the time, sometimes in very muddy fields. Has AT tyres on which help. I personally haven't done long trips in it but it has been driven to Scotland from South Wales and they seemed reasonably happy in it!

Pretty bulletproof off road, comfy enough on shorter trips and good space in it (I'm 6'3" and I regularly sit in the back ... and fit.. which is not often the case - especially not in a Fiat 500 😂 )

Its also good to have selectable 4WD, saves a bit on the fuel which might be worth considering (one of the big problems with the Land Rovers I find - except for the obvious factor that the only time its reliable is when its strapped to a recovery truck!).

I am wanting a vehicle that is:

1) Able to comfortably seat three or four six foot tall people.
2) Be good for long distances - regularly have to drive 600 or 1,000 miles in one go and then have to be intelligent at the other end.
3) Be able to cope with forestry / mountain type roads with snow and mud. Not needing rock crawling off road type performance.
4) be able to tow 3 tonnes

Currently run an A4 Allroad with 140,000 miles. Does all of the above save towing capacity is only 1.9 tonnes.

If a Disco 4 was well built, reliable and not a fortune to run may be an option. I have seriously considered the double cab Pickups, but they are not really 4 seaters. Back seats in the Ranger, D-Max and Hilux are fine for short journeys and carrying luggage but not much more.

What else should I look at?
