6.5 Creedmoor Load Suggestions

Now the IMR4451 is in the UK I am running tests with the 147 eld m for over 1200y , my ladders are showing the powder is as good as imr 4350 with a 41.4 grain load @2.825 coal sub 1/2 moa without much effort and soft to shoot . I was use'g R16 with very good results for the 140 gr eld m .
Hi Paul,
1. Have you shot 4451 with the Hornady 140 ELD-M?
2. What was the COAL and load for the R16 using the 140 ELD-M, usual caveat.
I've tried 140 ELD-M in my Tikka T3x CTR, 24 " using LRP( Murom) Sellier and Bellot cases, at 1000 and found that RS 62 was a bit underpowered at 41.8-42.2 at COAL 2.810. From the actual drop, in comparison to the drop indicated by the Hornady ballistic chart, I was getting around 2580 -2633 fps. Without a chron, I am guessing. At 200, 300, 500, the drop was spot on with the H chart. OK at 800 but 1 min low, good group. I was struggling to group at 1000. Yes, that maybe down to me. Any ideas please or advice? The 42.2 load was a proven load from someone very experienced and supposedly going around 2710. I am definitely far from 2710.
That is why I am interested in the above powders. I picked RS62 because of it's single base and for the longevity on the lands. I don't shoot constantly, so wear isn't a massive issue but I don't want to have to re-barrel in the future.

Edit sorry this was 147gr ELDM NOT 140'S
only a test first and last 5 round group

col 2.825 41.4 gr but i forgot to put the fps down .

That was the thread I started over on UKV. I have loads of RS 62 load data for 123, 139 and 140grn bullets with small primer brass in Creedmoor if anyone wants some suggestions, with the usual caveats applied.
Hi there Im using rs62 all I can find help for is 140grn do you have any idea for 130grn sierra just want a starting point sako case, large primer, many thanks chap

Wrote to Reload Swiss and they Kindly sent me some simulation data which I’m having trouble posting.

In this respect, Reload Swiss are as good as it gets. In the past 18 months I have asked them for load data to suit 3 different rifles with a variety of bullets/powders. Gave them rifle data and they have come back, sometimes next day, others just a couple of days. Top company and results have been top class

Well just goes to show what a search will find, 2years old and still relevant for me as just starting to reload 6.5 creed.
Tikka T3 ROUGHTEC
Peterson brass
RS62
ELD X
BtO 2.360 as I want to find the right node
Many thanks Bryn.

Also consider some of the new / newer powders. Alliant re16 and Viht N555 are both ideally matched to this cartridge. RS62 takes a great deal of beating though, not just in 6.5 Creedmoor, but in any application that suits H4350 and similar grades.

(For those who fret about N555 as being 'double-base' and hence 'barrel burners', look at Viht's data charts for the two rifle powder families and compare specific energies. A friend described N555 as " You mean the N100 powder that pretends to be a 500?"

High Energy Rifle Powders | Reloading | Handloading | Gun powder - Vihtavuori

N100 Smokeless Powders | Reloading | Handloading | Single base Rifle powder - Vihtavuori

At 3,700 J/g it is the same as N140 and less than that quoted for N150.)

Might have to try N555. I'm using 44gr RS62 with LRP's and 143gr ELD-X. It's a little hot, but groups well.

Have you looked at Alliant Reloder 16 and 17?

RL-16 in particular has been generating some rave reviews in 6.5 Creedmoor down here. I sat side-by-side with my hunting buddy with his identical Creedmoor last week, he loaded 50 143gr ELD-X with RL-16 and I was mightily impressed with both accuracy and velocity, which was an effortless half-MOA and close to 150fps faster than my hot load of H4350. With no presures signs, whereas my H4350 load is borderline. As a medium range hunting load, the accuracy and velocity combined with very high sectional density of the heavy 6.5mm projectile is absolutely deadly. This switch was motivated by a guy I know who builds his own rifles and published a load development process that had quite remarkable results with RL-16.

RL-17 has also been experimented with, though I don’t have firsthand experience of the outcomes. I am hearing positive vibes though.

Also, as a wildcard, the slow RL-26 is getting some support, though the loads are quite compressed. But very fast.

All testing with the above powders was done with SR Lapua and Peterson brass.

Just noting here that I got told off for mentioning the powder weight which I won’t do, suffice to say it was over book max.

Another thing to mention is that the increased velocity with RL-16 means 18” and 20” Creedmoor barrels are performing at the same speed as 24” with H4350.
Care to share the load development with the RL-16 please?
