Hornady superformance SST 95gr in .243

Evening all,
Is the Hornady superformance SST 95gr in .243 classed as a boat tail round or not?
If not, what common .243 would be classed as boat tails?
Reason is I’m struggling to get any decent groups with this 95gr sst round in .243 out of a 1/10 20inch barrel.

Yes SST are boat tailed. I reload the 95gr SST for my 243 and they are very accurate in my rifle. I don’t push my loads anywhere near as fast as the Superformance rounds as I don’t feel I need to. Why do you feel you want Superformance?

I bought a box just to try for deer when I first got the rifle, but have never been confident in its accuracy to use up the rest of the box

I run have them through a Browning Abolt and find them very accurate...conversely the standard Hornady “whitetail” load that appears to run the same bullet only at slower speeds spread like a shotgun

I’ve started home loading the SST now as it’s very authoritative on game.

The Fiocchi, Winchester Silvertip & Remington Accutip all perform well too in 95g too and are similar bullets.

Maybe it’s just a case of your rifle not liking that loading. Don’t get too caught up on the weight though. My Abolt will group 105g Gecko softpoints tighter than any other factory load I’ve tried. I find they are great for fallow but pass through little roe too easily without dumping their energy.

That's odd. All the 95gr SST 6mm/243 bullets I have are flat based, unlike larger calibre SST, which are boat-tail designs (with some exceptions like 30cal 125gr and .25cal 117gr SST)

The Hornady website shows the 95gr 6mm as flat-based, too: here

I have just checked the SST that I have and looked in the box this time, I looked at the box the first time. You are correct, they are flat base. Flat base bullet are more accurate up to 200yds than boat tail, I am told.

Rather unhelpfully, the image on your box of bullets shows both flat base and boat-tail.

This from their Hornady website:-

SECANT OGIVE, BOATTAIL PROFILE
Incorporating the pioneering Hornady secant ogive design, the tapered point, increased bearing surface and more aerodynamic profile, combined with a boattail base, makes the SST® more efficient with less drag and greater stability.

I am sat looking at a box on my study desk...perhaps I should just go and pull one...

I am curious now as I'm changing bullet choice so would be interested to see. They could be my next bullet

Happy to take one for the team...well if that's a boat tail it is tiny.

By the way, these were gifted from a friend of a friend and my Sako 75 loves them. He gave me two boxes of twenty (so forty rounds) and I only have eleven ten left...

Thanks, looks like a flat base or a very shallow boat tail?
Somehow missed the 'if that's a boat tail it's tiny' lol

In 95gr .243, 117gr .257, and 125gr .308 the SST isn't flat-based or boat-tailed but 'bevel-based'. :)
The 95gr .243 has the old Interlock design along with the sexy red tip, but Hornady are currently replacing the old 'bevel-based' Interlock shape with boat-tailed versions.
The SST is boat-tailed in all other weights & larger calibres, so methinks it'll probably get the boat-tail treatment very soon to make it more appealing.
If it shoots buy it while you can as the current price is cheap.

In that case, I shall give it a miss! I'd rather work a load up for everything and be able to get a steady supply lol
