Guardian - Golden Eagle Tag found near Grousemoor - who are these idiots ?

Typical Guardian reporting, short of facts and biased. Would somebody please enlighten me on the following:- who often does the tag communicate, daily , hourly continuously etc; what is the life span of the battery -has to be finite or they would be too heavy-? Where can Joe Public see where the birds are? It's too easy to say on a grouse moor, maybe the last communication was on a grouse moor, but if it only reports daily a Golden Eagle can fly a long way in 24 hours! If the tag stops transmitting the battery may be flat, the unit got wet or is faulty. If the bird dies then the tag will transmit an identical location over a period, if it dies and there are no transmissions, then the unit has maybe been damaged or meddled with. We need more information to assess the possible cause and the location of the incident. Anybody can say a tagged bird has disappeared without any proof of it being tagged etc.
As to it being an example of shootings' inability to control this behaviour during the shut down, it disappeared four years ago, when there was no lockdown etc.

There is no evidence that the crime was committed by anyone connected with the estate. If they find the culprit, he or she should be prosecuted; in the meantime, the Guardian should stop guessing.

Incidentally, presumably birds-of-prey disappear near grouse moors because they live near grouse moors? Fat people generally die near McDonalds rather than near the greengrocer's: that doesn't mean Ronald is bumping 'em all off. Well, he is, but indirectly...you know what I mean...

I suggest you read mr averies blog, how does a gold eagle remove the the tag, cut the aerial from it, wrap it lead sheeting and throw it in the river and then completely disappear never to be seen again, one clever bird.

Sorry Carl just to many raptors disappear on grouse moors to be a coincidence.

Stop it. I have hurt a couple of my ribs and all this ****ing myself at the thought of McFat surrendering to cardiac failure on the doorstep of Maccies is more than my intercostals can take.

They live on grouse moors.
They also live elsewhere and don’t suddenly then disappear, I would like to think shooting is not the cause but the facts appear to show otherwise. This golden eagle spent many months flying round other parts then quickly disappeared on reaching the grouse moor.

I have read it. I did say that in general terms that they could have been meddled with if it stopped transmitting, in this particular case it obviously has. There are other cases where neither the bird or transmitter have been found. And several where the bird was been sighted after the transmitter failed. If you own the land and find a dead bird would you report it? I bet my bottom dollar that if you did Mr Averie would still blame you.

The local jungle drums have been expecting this one to come out. Thought was August 12, but it seems to have been delayed....

The Isle of Wight White-Tailed Eagle introduction is worth a look. It’s a very professional looking project and you can read about the tracking etc.here.

It’s interesting to read that despite the intense surveillance undertaken of just a handful of birds, six in the initial release, that 30% of them simply disappeared - and also refreshing that there wasn’t a knee jerk reaction to apportion blame elsewhere.

RSPB 24 recorded incidents, not one prosecution.Another old spot flew round my chimney. I've seen it all, been raided, nothing found because nothing there in the first place.
Eagle disappears on grouse moor, how does anybody know where it disappeared until it's found. Lots of murders but first you need a body to prosecute. Tag in the North sea, did somebody dive for it.
I just found a Unicorn ear tag in my garden, you don't believe me? Well it's just about as true as all this rubbish.
We all know there are one or two miscreants about, I know an awful lot of keepers but they are all abiding by the law on threat of dismissal for any wildlife crime.

Running with the figures alleged, 87 raptors disappear suspiciously per year, over 230,000km2, of which about 25,000km2 is alleged to be managed for grouse. And the number of crimes proven is in single figures. While zero is obviously preferable, the line being taken by the Guardian and antis - that the law-abiding must be bashed until the crime rate is zero - is manifestly ridiculous, obviously sinister and morally entirely wrong.
