Baikal

I remember seeing these in the Ruko ( Canadian Importer of Baikal firearms in the days of the USSR ) catalogue . I never saw one of the higher end models in the flesh , but they were available here during the seventies . There are a lot of Baikal shotguns kicking around over here as we didn't have trade restrictions against the Soviet Union .
They weren't Purdeys , but they were solid , reliable guns for the money .

Anyone remember Vostock? shotguns, russian made . Very nice , haven't seen one for years, sold in UK 1980's or thereabouts.
I remember Vostock.
We just don't see the higher grade Russian shotguns here in the U.K. The higher grade Russian guns are extremely rare outside of the mother country. I'm not even sure if they still make high grade guns or if it was for only a limited time way back when they wanted to show that they could build the best if they wanted to and not just build utilitarian guns.

My old Baikal O/U doesn't look anything like the guns in the video but I have the utmost confidence in it. I just wish it had the same confidence in my ability.

There's still a lot of Vostok 22lr bolt actions kicking around here , solid little rifles . They're kinda like that crazy uncle in every family , we all have one , but no one talks about them lol .

I've only ever come across heavy barrel .22 target rifles by Vostock never any sporting rifles. The target rifle is a real big heavy lump with the ugliest huge railway sleeper of a stock. Apparently they shot well and reputably placed well in several Olympic games. They made the B.S.A. international rifle look dainty by comparison and that's no small rifle either.

In also remember the Vostock .22 target pistol from the 70s. The guys that shot them swore by them but again they were pretty much out of fashion. They came in a wooden case with several large barrel weights and a huge oil can that was about the size of the canteen that John Wayne carried on his saddle. They may have been ugly but they were reliable and accurate from what I can remember.

You can still find all of the above for sale fairly regularly locally . The target versions were very "Soviet " to say the least , but they do shoot well . The sporters , TOZ-18's ? , I may be wrong , were also accurate rifles . Like most things Russian , they always worked .

only shotgun i have ever had handy when you need a fence post driven in

I had a proof house tour some years ago and the chap showing us around showed us the burst barrels of a British 12 bore gun that had been fired with a 20 bore cartridge wedged in the barrel. The gun was totally destroyed. He then said that they did the same with a Baikal shotgun to no ill effects. They then repeated the exercise once again to no ill effects. So they had the steel in the barrels of the Baikal analysed and the results indicated that the steel was exactly the same as was used in the Kalashnikov 47 rifle which is renowned for its durability.
I don't know if this is just a tall story or if totally true but its certainly believable with the Baikal.

The Baikal MC8 is a quality shotgun. Quite a few years ago there were two best quality sidelock Baikals at my LGS. I had a good fondle and they seemed very nice indeed.

I see edd has a nice Vostok
on here ...

Vostoks were used by the Russian team in competition.
good guns. Slightly different action and the screwed on fore end IIRC but good guns.

I worked for a farmer who had a single barreled Biakal he used to keep with him on the combine (no cab in those days). It fell from by the seat into the combine bed and stopped the auger. When we managed to get the gun from out of the bed the auger had a dent in it and the gun has a minor scratch on the wood work!

Couple of mates have Baikals, solid shootable guns. Not the best looking mind you....Never seen a high end one.

I had a £49 single shot Baikal back in the mid-eighties. Agricultural? Yes. Utterly reliable? Also yes. I'd have another Baikal without a second thought.
