It sounds like you have all benefited from the right traits coming to the fore, coundn't it just as easily have resulted in a dog with the worst of both breeds?
If you could be sure that only the best traits were present, I for one would love one of these dogs.
glyn I can understand you not being invited back to pick up, those GWP's can be a bit hard mouthed. Great for deer but a dog with a mouth like an alligator isn't very good with game birds really.
Used to go grouse shooting to Glenshee in the 80s the keeper had 3 or 4 of these crosses and they worked well, getting OUT THERE and pointing well....
THE hybrid vigour disappears with next generation, im sure they are good dogs there own way, just puzzled why , anyone who was serious about there dogs would ,settle for second best ,unless its fianacial, because few yrs down line your back square one,as for the KC, critising them easy ,and a total lack undertanding, their full of "hybred vigor" a dam good dog . What do the kennel club do with all the money they make anyway . Get the cross breed honest you wont look back but you might get looked down on![]()
So which way round? Lab on GWP bitch or GWP on Lab bitch? I suppose the latter would increase the chances of the rough coat and reduce the risk of bad hips in the pups?

[[[[[2nd best I am not sure about that, I don't have one so no axe to grind but know a lot of hill men who do, now these are the attributes the guys that I have spoken to give them, firstly look OK with a long tail which most people don't think a GWP does multi purpose better retrievers than a GWP most don't have the hard mouth that a lot GWPs have
but still hard enough to mix it with a fox, they also say they mature quicker and are easier to train than GWP
say similar to train as a pure lab.
if the guys you no are breeding from the x breeds, then their offspring are mongresl plain and simple, no matter how many hill men you know, as for easier too train, if you dnt know what your doing stay away from fine breeds such as gwp, and as for down the line quote,i was talking about a breeding programne/leave the gwp in hands owners/breeders that understand this specalist breed,if we had a breed master like the VDD. we wouldnt be havimg this debate.pure and simple
A lot of these hill men use them for everything retrieving game, tracking deer and vermin control.
I don't quite get your point about a few years down the line and your back to square one , these are first cross then these guys are breeding the offspring to each other, in effect a new breed which is how most of our present day breeds came about, there is enough demand from keepers that there is no problem selling pups.
As I have said don't have one myself, and I am only repeating what I have been told by people who have them.
What I will say is IMO the crosses are better looking dogs than either a lab or a GWP but that is just my opinion
For the record I am a GSP man
They work on the hill better than a lab , their quicker to mature than a pointer and softer mouthed . As for fianacial reasons , its that what coursed the problems with pedigee dogs ? breeding for money instead of breeding good workers to good workers to replace your stock . Could you also tell me what good the KC have done with all your money from litters youve registered and all the shows the run . Terriers is my thing , i breed workers to workers , looks are unmiportant to me nor money , i give pups to mates so i know where my blood is . Ive worked with grouse on moors you will have heard of , ive had labs pointers and crosses and the cross is a far more versatile dog , my understanding comes from experience of all three of the breeds above .
