223 ballistics - not what it says on the tin ! - would welcome any advice

Hi, I am shooting Foxes with 223 - but have seen some issues with Zero / bullet drop - not as advised from Hornady or calculators. I am using Hornady factory loaded 55g V-MAX and on the box advise 3240 fps. - 200yd zero / 100 = +1.4'' The sight is 2.5'' above bore. I have it zero / set POA at 200yds but at 100yds it is +6'' - so easy to miss a Fox over the top ! All this flat shooting +/- 1.5 '' is not what i have found . Any Advice would be welcome.

The velocity on the box is for a 24" barrel at 20 celcius, I seem to recall. A shorter barrel, a moderator, very cold temperatures, a headwind - or tailwind - will all affect the actual bullet velocity and behaviour.

Much like different tyres will work differently to the stopping distances given in the highway code

Your scope height sounds rather high. I've a Picatinny rail on my rifles and with a 30mm tubed scope I reckon my scope height is 1.9 inches. If you use Strelok or another online ballistics calculator, you will find that varying scope height does vary the results. Secondly, your muzzle velocity may be considerably less than what the box says. Find a pal with a Magnetospeed and get some velocities with that.

Running at 55g vmax through a ballistics app zero at 200y to be 6 inches high at a 100y bullet would only be doing 2750fps this would be slow even for a 20inch barrel

Plus six inches at 100 yards is certainly not the way to go, what is your usual range you shoot at?
Go and shoot it at 100 yards and re zero, (you could go 1 inch high, not SIX ) then test it at 150yds 200 yds etc

Many thanks for the help - the barrel is 16.5'' bull barrel and with a Laurence precision moderator. Scope to Bore is 2.5'' as it is a Wraith NV scope

1. Muzzle velocities are calculated from a 24" barrel

2. BC's are listed as static, but change with velocity. But also don't mean a whole lot in the first several hundred yards (i.e. if it's close, it'll work fine; most can't shoot the difference in the error).

3. Why are you zeroing at 200yds? Zero at 100yds. It's much easier to remember a single set of "come ups" that to try and remember what is up and what is down.

4. Find a chronograph and measure the velocity of the ammunition in your rifle, if you want to be more precise, especially at longer ranges. Rabbits past 500+ yds is not out of the ordinary if you have trued your ballistics and understand your drops/come ups.

i shoot anything from 50yds to 200 with a lot at 100 - 150 yds, I went for the 200yds zero as it seemed the best for MPBR but as you say it may be worth going the other way about it and try 100yds with + 1" and see what it does out to 200

it groups 1'' at 200yds
Thats one very accurate gun then :-| especially with that barrel length.

Get it chrono ed , and forget about what the box says, my advice, for the ranges you are shooting at, is zero at 75 yards
At 3000fps , BC of .23 and scope height of 2.5 " you are half inch low at 50 and 160 yards, half inch high at 110, and 2 inch low at 200.
If your MV is higher (it wont be a lot) even better.

Many thanks for the advice - i will give that a go. Yes it is plenty accurate - I only found out after buying it (as there is nothing marked on the barrel until you remove it - that it has a Bench rest quality barrel from Birgir Saemundsson from Iceland !

You mention the Wraith, I’ve been reading a fair few comments about people having strange occurrences with them regarding zeroing, similar to yours.
Folk saying they zero at 50 and it won’t even hit paper at 100 or the other way round etc.
Have you checked the drop with a conventional scope?

many thanks - i did have a sidewinder on it for a while and it was still similar drop difference. I agree with Stephentri above - it is probably only doing 2750 - 2900 fps - as this sort of velocity is talked about by some of the USA AR reloaders into 16'' barrels. I just need to find someone local with a Crono

Hornady muzzle velocities are utter BS. The 24" barrel things is BS. Maybe you will get somewhere near from a 26" or longer....

I had a .223 with a 181/2" barrel, I now have a .223 with a 24" barrel, the same ammo runs around 400FPS faster in the new rifle compared to the old ! Chrono yours to see what you actually are getting
