30-06 for everything. Talk me out of it.

I've decided to chop in my 300 H&H (can't get the ammo overseas easily), and my 7x64 (shoots too loose) and get a new rifle. Quarry will be UK deer, Euro Boar, and Plains game. I'm a stalker not a shooter, and so I don't favour long range, seldom over 150 metres.
Must be able to shoot copper accurately, and have decent ammo availability in case I get stuck. I've had 6.5x55, 270, 7x57, 8x57 and 375H&H. Never had a 30-06 before, but they just seem to work, according to the books. The only negative is being a former military cartridge I cannot use it in France.
Any good reason not to go ahead..?

A while ago I had a similar dilemma - Seems that in practical terms a .308 is so close that that is the way to go.

30.06 will shoot "flatter" for about 30 yards more but as your shooting is around 150 M you are better served by a .308 which will have far less felt recoil. Yes the 30.06 will shoot heavier bullets but a .308 will shoot 220 grain anyway so do you really need more?

Gun blue did a youtube video on this subject .....

Does the French prohibition still apply? If so, and you're likely to shoot there, I'd get a shiny new 7x64.

If not, .30-06 all the way. I've never had one, but I certainly would now we're in the foothill of the lead-free mountains.

You can use a 30-06 for everything. I grew up around people who hada 12 ga, a 22, and a 30-06. That was it.~Muir
Essentially that’s what I still have! A couple of “hangers on” but the three you mention would be what I keep if pushed!

do it, 30-06 is a great chambering, happily carry bullets up to 200gns if not more, and down to the lightweights. Ive got several other calibres but if we were ever restricted to one calibre, I wouldn't hesitate to keep the 30-06 and discard the rest.

No reason at all not to,

Get one bought man

I bought one, just tried the non lead ammo in it, shot better than I would have thought after reading all the negatives about the lead free. Will do boar in France, with no' restriction on Military calibers' 303,30.06. Ammunition is available as the non lead usage is in place as it is here, so fill your boots and buy a (BLASER) just saying as it does cause a ripple on here?:coat:

Whan I was a kid, and I mean 8-9 years old, I remember reading that a person could set out to test two previously established loads for the 30-06 every weekend and die of old age before you reached the end of the list. My favorite pest load for a 30-06 is a .310" round ball (buck shot) pushed into a flared case neck. Over 8 grains of Unique powder this would shoot about an inch at 25 yards. For target shooting, a Lyman 311-284 bullet weighing 210 grains over 15 grains of Unique and seated to the lands. Never saw a rifle that this load would fail to give MOA.~Muir
