What’s better than a .270?

I love my 270, and I have a 30-06, which I also love. For the 30-06 I load a 150gr bullet over 50gr of N140 for deer in the UK, and loaded heavier bullets aboard

Love a .270
Will always own one

But….
Now chucking 147gr ELD-Ms at 2950 from a 22” barrel
6.5-284

Less powder
More Velocity
Heavier bullet
Less perceived recoil

Loving it

Not a cartridge to feed from factory ammo though

270 is great
But its just not an efficient cartridge
56-60gr of powder should drive 130-150gr bullets much faster than the .270 does
Hey Edd, Is it not true your 284 is a barrel burner. (800-1000 rds ) ?

Buck.

I have a 270 and never really taken a shine to it. A lot of calibre confidence comes from success with a certain rifle and is probably as much to do with barrel weight, scope moderator and accuracy/consistency of that specific setup. I have a 243 that is really accurate and I never have to rezero. Is that down to the calibre? Probably not.

Barrels are like tyres and condoms…
Consumable and only fun if you use them properly

Cant say I am too worried
This came to me second hand, former owner on here!!
Seen god know how many before me and at least 3-400 since I got it

Easiest rifle I have ever shot to 1000+

Dare I say it ….better than my 300 Norma…I feel dirty just saying that….

After many years i have come to terms with the fact that under UK deer legislation stating 243 win or its equivalent upwards , it just comes down to the user via a mix of personal ethics and skill that gets the job done on all UK deer just great ! It really unimportant how big a thump the spent bullet makes in the earth behind the beast .

Interesting concept Edd ( tyre and condoms…)
Goodyear vs Durex !
I’ll stick to the .270 availability of ammo etc. etc

Rgds, Buck.

There’s no argument there BB , l to used a girly gun for many years…( a great killer )
But moving on to reds l feel a more substantial
calibre is better alround.

I’m using 143 eldx in my swede at 2700, good to 500 and not much wind drift
I load some eldx for the Swede for my old man but with a 150 yard zero, it drops about 2 1/2” at 200 which seems quite marked. Thats with 42.7 gr n160 if I remember correctly - but don’t quote me on that. I think I’ve got too used to a .270 point and shoot.

Which do you prefer? I’ve been tempted by the 06 with 150 grain bullets. .270 seems to edge trajectory with 130 grain but not by much in real terms at 200 yards

With a .222 or .223, some type of 6.5, and a 30-06, there’s very little game that you wouldn’t be very well equipped for out to typical and ethical hunting ranges. Add a good rangefinder and you are good to go. Just my opinion but I have a .223, 6.5 Creedmoor, and a 30-06 and a decent rangefinder. I feel very well equipped for anything I would want to hunt in the States. I also have other chamberings because I like guns 😂. But those three would really be all you need. All have large selection of factory ammunition available almost everywhere and all are available in a wide variety of good rifles. I actually just ordered another rifle in 6.5 CM because that caliber is so much fun to shoot. And it’s easy to shoot accurately just like a .223 is because of the mild recoil. Just my thoughts.

Mentally perhaps ? But in reality all you get with bigger bullets in my experience with copper is more noise( if the cartrige carries more powder - more recoil). . That said i am talking today with the best of todays copper bullets in lighter weights .243 win upwards . The 100 grain tTSX 6.5 from my 260 and almost always exits. I plan to get another 243 shooting copper in still lighter bullets , i rate impact speed more than bullet weight as the lighter bullets expand better at longer ranges ( previously with lead ? they tended to over expand often failing to exit )

Always been 308 for me but got offered a nice 270 a few years ago and partially went to the dark side!
All honesty -nothing between them and use 308 with 162g Sako blades and 270 with 120 blades. Both work as they should and no issues with red roe or odd sika.
Got rid of 243 as it was never getting out of cabinet.

Again, they all serve the same purpose. 90%, if not more of UK stalking is sub 300 yards, as we are a small island in comparison to those western game hunters in the US, or the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Find a rifle you’re confident to shoot repeatedly and preferably one with low recoil. I’m a big fan of the 6.5 Swedish, because it’s sweet to shoot and more forgiving than a .308 or .270 on the shoulder (maintain target sight throughout pulling the shot) - and I got a good deal on a rifle, most importantly.

The hardest part of shooting at range is wind, not drop :)

Well folks, I’ve had a .270 for maybe 15 years. It just works.

I have used a few of the usual calibers apart from maybe .308.

Did convince the old man to get a Swede, slightly loopy compared to what I’d like. But inside 200 all fairly academic, still in kill zone anyway etc.

I’ve had a new rifle craving for a while now. I can’t seem to find anything that does better for flat ish trajectory and reloading availability etc than the .270.

I realise no bullet is gravity resistant but I am much more of a .17hmr than .22lr guy even within .22 distances if that gives you an idea of my style. I like a point and shoot.

I have considered a .30-06. But to get similar sort of trajectory, it was like 165 grain and most folk seem to shoot 180s? Doesn’t seem that efficient either.

The .25-06 sounds appealing but actually no advantages over what I have. And probably less ammo selection even for reloading.

.308, probably more ‘loopy’?

6.5PRC may be an option? But is it just more faff? A new .270 barrel (which won’t kill me more deer) may feel like a new gun.

I’ll be honest, the Swede the old man has would put factory federal into the same hole,(with myself shooting) but I’ll only get 3/4” with the same rifle in .270 and I don’t think it’s a recoil issue. Maybe it’s just not quite the right bullet choice. Would the .30 cals be naturally a little more accurate?
A 135 grain bullet is the accuracy load for a .270. That is per old time gun writer Jim Carmichael. He is well respected and admired in these parts.

How about a .280 Ackley Improved? Gets you almost 7mm Magnum performance with less powder burn and less recoil. It’s been around a long time as a wildcat but is SAMII approved now so there’s factory ammunition available. I don’t have one but it’s certainly a very capable cartridge and a step up from the .270.
A very good idea.

7mm PRC sounds/reads like a good allrounder, waiting for the European rifle makers to adopt it, they are taking an age.
