Bloody Ticks - getting everywhere.

Due to my stalking, I thought I was aware of ticks and take the relevant precautions, however rather foolishly thought that they only thrived in certain areas or environments.

Today I was proved wrong, having pulled one off the dog (thankfully not in yet) which had only been at the local park.

Lived in the area for the last 40 years and never heard of them locally. My Mrs put a note on her mums net thing and within minutes found out a boy in my sons class got tagged a fortnight ago - poor lad, full bulls eye and antibiotics.

Anyway, posted as a reminder - take precautions and check yourself people.

I hate the bloody things! Already started pulling them off the horses. Hopefully though, this recent freezing spell of weather will have killed off any that were fooled by last week's milder temperatures

Spray your hunting trousers, jacket etc with this stuff, alongwith midge net etc. It stops the little shites getting onto and causing problems.

Yes you can buy Permethrin impregnated kit - Rovince etc - but its a capital outlay, whereas £10 for a permethrin spray will give you significant protection. I have been using it on FjallRaven and Deer Hunter fleece for a few years and not had problems from ticks. Also seems to keep midges away.

Lyme disease is bloody awful and speaking as somebody who has had it, its not a disease I would recommend getting as it is potentially life changing.

In the name of science, I conducted a little experiment with the Sawyer’s permethrin that I use on my perfectly healthy tick.

Moving the glass to the danger zone, it was obvious almost instantly that it was working. Plenty of what looked like head throws, followed by the legs curling up. Amazingly it took almost 8 minutes to stop moving.

Took a while, but think a thin spraying would be enough to incapacitate them enough to fall off an item of clothing.

when I first got my dogs, one of them managed to pick up a tick from the garden in the first week!! (they hadnt been out of the garden at that point) it was a good 8 years before the next one and that was after a walk through the local woods, God knows where the first one wandered in from !

To follow up last years experiment, I pulled another tick off the dog alive this afternoon.

My new experiment was my new Rovince shirt (washed once)

Bearing in mind that the shirt was lying flat on my freezer, I believe any tick would have dropped off long before if it had the opportunity.

1 min - active

Min 2 - active

Min 3 - slowing down

Min 4 - slower, occasional head bump

Min 5 - slower, moving like on hot sand

Part 2 to follow.

Min 6 - slow, occasional collapse

Min 7 - legs beginning to fail

Min 8 - collapse but still moving

Min 9 - rolled it

Min 10 - pretty much shutdown.

Min 14 - very slight leg movement but not going anywhere. Got bored and squished it.

I shall test it out on Northumbrian midges this summer. Wearing a tablecloth and assuming a rudimentary Scottish accent does not fool the cross-border variety of the species.

I use aldi,s green bottle bug spray liberally and touch wood it works ,but yes the little buggas are thriving at the minute.

We very rarely see ticks on our deer, but a chap in the next village picked one up from long grass and contracted Lyme disease.

Sadly, an all too regular occurrence from stalking but I found 2 on the Teckel last week and the only area he could have got them from was the long grass outside our house - mower failed the weekend before Another dose of Advantix applied……
