Hornady Amax as a Deer round?

Hi all and thanks in advance.
I have been using 155grn Hornady Amax heads in my 308 target rifle with spectacularly accurate results.
I have heard of some guys using the Amax for deer and my question is ..is this true as i assumed the Amax was a target projectile only?

Must have been a politition who came up with calling the arse of a case the head.
I have no problems with people calling the projectiles a head as it's almost less confusing
than bullet. Dictionaries adapt to the spoken language, wait and see.

A-max, in countries where it is legal to use them on game they work fine, as with every
projectile the impact speed and type of game will dictate which bullet suits.
155 or 168gr A-max in 308 works well for deer. Very similar to a SST.

I think the summary of all the previous threads is: Yes, you CAN, but NO you SHOULD NOT do it..why, because it's no longer considered and classified as a deer round...there is a reason for that, respect it and help show deer the respect they deserve when you are attempting to take their life as humanely as possible....do you shoot geese with a 28 gauge, 7's and/or 24 gram cartridges, NO!

The geese analogy doesnt work because 24 grams of 7s would not hit as hard as 42 grams of 3s but AMAX hit as hard as SST!

PKL, nothing wrong with talking about bullets.
The most important thing to bring your deer down after you pulled the trigger.
I'd put the A-max in the same category as sst and nos Bt's, not much between them.
Either of them react like a varmint bullets if the impact speed is too high, but at 308
speeds they work ok. At extended range and say at 2000fps impact speed these will also still expand.
Below that one would maybe think about cast bullits or? No more copper jacket...at all.

With all due respect PLK you don’t know what you are taking about, ethically there is no issue with using A-Maxs for deer, legally that depends on the interpretation of the law and whether you are shooting in Scotland or England. In England the bullet must only be of Hollow point or soft point design (ballistic tips are classed as hollow point, the hollow point is filled with the plastic tip) in Scotland the projectile (head for Brit) must also expand in a predictable manner.

Hornady in edition 6 of there reloading manual used to recommend the use of A-Maxs for thin skinned game, they have now changed that, and are non-committal. I have sectioned A-Maxs and SST bullets, the Jackets are the same thickness and the size of hollow point is identical. The only defence is that the hunting bullets have a cannelure for crimping.

The UK is only a small market for hunting bullets and most nations do not have the same restrictions on the type of bullet they can use, 1000s of deer world wide fall the A-Max no problem.

Walk down main street, ask 100 people what they think the word bullet describes.
Then ask 100 shooters, there'll be plenty that get it wrong to.
I've been a foreigner wherever I've lived all my life so I wouldn't take innacurate wording
too critical.

While I have every sympathy with language changing with useage, I think on the whole such changes should increase clarity or compactness of expression.
As a cartridge already has a head, and 'bullet head' is longer than 'bullet', the whole thing seems rather pointless: unless, of course, we favour changes in the meaning of words for the convenience of the ignorant.
