Well it does pay to keep a rifle in the vehicle when out checking stuff...
This afternoon I headed out to check on a mob of cows i haven’t seen for a month or and check the fences and water supply. As I came over a rise in the distance were the distinct multicoloured shapes of goats, probably 400m off at the top of a scrub covered ridge. I wasn’t expecting them here, I’d seen them in the vague vicinity before but never my side of the fence and never this far up.
Needing some goat meat for the freezer I backed up and drove a bit nearer on their side of the fence and parked up. I stalked up to just below the ridge checking the wind as I went. When I got there I found they’d moved in a little, but as I crept forward they started heading back my way. They were headed by a big billy with the biggest swinging beard I’ve seen - I thought he had a collar for a second. He spotted me about 50m off and froze, I don’t think the mob’s been hunted before as he took a few more steps and kept staring. Then the nannies came up also had a good look.
Eventually one of the bigger nannies decided I was up to no good and made a break arcing off to my left, followed by a smaller nanny - i actually thought it was her kid, maybe it was. They pulled up and i hit the smaller one behind the shoulder. Needless to say the 350gr home cast flat nose ensured she didn’t get up.
Of course all hell let loose amongst the mob and the careened off down the fence line, i fired at a kid and brought one two down, then another shot had another nanny.
So plenty for the freezer and the dog, not bad seeing as it was spontaneous
