Tikka T3 Varmint?

Anyone had experience of these rifles, good or bad?

I have been offered one of these in stainless steel, the shorter barrelled model, which is factory threaded in .308.

They are not pretty but are supposed to shoot well, or is this a myth?

I have that exact rifle in 223, and am very happy with it. It isn't the prettiest as you say, but it shoots just as well as my Sako or Steyr. The trigger is the same as the Sako, and the bolt throw is the best of the three. The long action isn't theoretically ideal, but I find it makes no difference. A buddy has the same model in 243 and he's equally happy.

As Chris has said I have one in .243. it's now my foxing rig. After lugging it round Berkshire with Dom last summer I put in for a variation and now have a lite in 30-06 as well.

If you want to 'try before buy' you are more than welcome to try mine first. I am off work next week so can sort something out then if you like.

P.S I have the longer barelled version, wish I went for the shorter one. With a jet z on the front it can be a bit long sometimes.

I had one in .308 short action 24", did not like the stock far to flexible and poor quality but the action/trigger was nice, not sure what you intend to use it for but I found it to heavy to carry around, yes accurate but no more so than the two remy's I use now.

Yes 308 is long action.....in a Tikka T3, as is a 223 or any of the chamberings.

don't think you can go wrong with that.
A short heavy barrel in 308 is ok to carry in the field and performance wise.
I'd certainly prefer the shorter barrell.

PKL, the previous models of Tikka, the m595/590 were short actions and the m695/690 were long actions. Those lovely people from Beretta took over Tikka and "rationalised" it, as accountants are prone to do, and produced the T3 which has but one length of action, no matter the cartridge size.

Hi Simon, i have this exact same gun in 20" barrel, it shoots sweet as a nut and produce's one hole 3 shot groups with sst's. And on the weight, it weigh's just the same as my standard barreled tikka 595 .243 so it seems normal to me.

Thanks to all who have offered help and information, unfortunately fruitlessly. I have decided on another make. I went and had a look at a T3 Varmint, and no matter how good they might be, I don't like the look or feel of them.

Edi, I have decided upon a very nicely kept, second hand, Steyr-Mannlicher SSG 69 P1. I am buying it from the chap who sold it originally, he knows how many rounds have been through it, and it comes with the original box and all the bits. Not what i thought i would end up with at all!

Edit; The rifle has kindly been put on one side for me, the deal to be completed after my recovery from the next lot of surgery I am due to have.

I am going to sell the Parker-Hale I bought not long ago, probably after I have had it cut down by an inch or two and threaded for a moderator. I have a T8 that will sit on it, and it is fitted with a German S&B 7x50. It will make a nice first rifle for someone who is not as clumsy as me, the very pretty wood deserves a good home.

The Tikka T3 for accuracy is very good.

I have a friend shoots a .243 and gets 1" groups at 200yds.

I find the T3 to be an exeptional rifle, it shoots really extremely well and its accuracy is well on par with many better customguns.
I have surprisingly found the T3 to shoot better than Sako rifles and as those are manufactured at the same factory, using the same barrels (with same threads and profiles) the only reason I can see for this accuracy is the stiff action.

I am shooting long range, just for the fun of it.
I am using one TRG42 in 338 LM and one T3 in 6,5x55, both in identical stocks (TRG 42 folder stocks)
The accuracy is great and the 6,5 round are very close in trajectory to the 338.
on 900 meters I have 7 mils of compensation on both guns.
Yes I know we werent discussing long range, but I toguht it was well worth meantioning as the accuracy is more than enogh.

T3 Rifles in 270 Standard issue to thr FC Rangers around my part of Scotland. Along with RWS ammo. They shoot more deer than you can shake a stick at.

Lots of Bull talked about different rifles, accuracy bla bla. Most problems are the guy behind the gun.

I use to test guns for magazines and write reviews, and both me and those others writes I have spoken to generally use to say that the T3 is the most accurate factory rifle availble.

When it comes to the poor triggerguard and the bolt schorud in plastic there is a very good company in Sweden who manufactures those.
www.alutek.eu makes new ones in 7075 aluminium.
The triggerguards can be had for either orignal mags or AICS mags.
