Rabbits

VHD 2 Covid 19 now there's a coincidence, virus that appear from nowhere, mixy up here seems to appear just after a land rover as past ( strange phenomenon)

I used to love it on one place in Scotland with bracken covered lower fringes. In December we used to do the rounds with mothballs or paper dipped in animal oil in each rabbit hole. The next two days would be spent working spaniels and shooting rabbits flushed from bracken clumps.
Brilliant sport. Did the same on a West country shoot with 40 yard wide tree belts, mothballs again. Where a track went through two would stand back to back whilst two more worked the belt with dogs. Some very big bags shot as rabbits scuttled across the tracks

Mothballs, now theres a thing, just learnt something new!
What traps were you using in earlier post?

We used rabbit cages by "Colin's Traps", he's on faceache and was a keeper all his life. He makes every sort of cage trap you can think of and he is in his 80's, a damned good bloke.

Worst year for me in a few years, they were nicley building for about the last 4 or 5 years but this year there are very little about in most places, except that is for one womens garden who seems to think im her on call rabbit man after the farmer gave her my number and doesnt even offer me a cup of tea when i sit out for her!
Same

Not overrun but nice numbers on a couple of permissions, funnily enough recently done a trapping mole clearance, the rabbits had done 20 times more damage than the moles, the owner said he hates moles because of the hills but doesn’t mind the rabbits He needs to go to spec savers I think :rofl::rofl:

Chemical warfare!! I bet you gave off a lovely odour after handling mothballs too. In days long gone we used creosote for rabbits and foxes with similar results. Happy memories. Rabbits now few and far between except on one permission where I am currently 11 short of 400 all shot with the 17hmr - terrific fun - even Mrs FB enjoys it so much I am just her bearer.

Three of us went to a rabbit permission last night that we used to clear 200 at least a year.

Between us, full dark with thermals, not a single one spotted.

At least the owner thinks were doing a grand job

We've got 2 rabbits, see them in the same field every night. I've named them Bert and Betty.
Thinking about it though, if we've only had 2 for the past year maybe I should rename them?

Generally I think the mothballs smelt better than we did😁. They are very handy and flick easily into a burrow, better than stooping down with rag or paper. Bought all the stock in one hardware shop. Shoot them now with a .22 Hornet.

Massive areas of the yorkshire dales are now virtually rabbit free with pockets here and there on estate land. Areas which we could probably see many hundreds on a night now lucky if you see a handful.

A few rabbits round here in pockets with the usual slight upsurge in numbers due to the breeding season. However, mixy is with us again as it is every year. This is the third year I've not kept ferrets as it's just not worth it, rather sad in a way as I always had some for the last seventy years or more.

Oh dear , keepers dropping RHD you think ?

And as far as moving vhd around, you even sure thats possible? When we've had outbreaks up here it kills so quick it dosnt get chance to spread from one pasture to the next .

Been getting enough to easily feed the dogs, got about three places that are showing through a steady increase

other places haven’t done so well, still down slightly on numbers, a case of keeping a happy level of viable numbers
in areas where they aren’t causing a problem

i would say overall they are on the way back but at a slow pace at the moment

bit off tangent I’ve had some fantastic rat shooting lately, they have definitely not been holding back on breeding, had some cracking nights out with air rifle and Mach 2 past few weeks
Is ammunition easy to get hold of for mach2 these days? Probably a good little round, I’ve never used one but fancied trying it.
