Best quality dry dog food for working breed puppy?

Hi All,

I'm about to take ownership of a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever puppy, which I'm quite excited about!

The dog will eventually be a house dog come gundog.

My question is, what do peple think is the best quality dry food for a working breed dog? What are the things to consider? Is it just protein content?

In the past our dogs have had CSJ.

Any opinions (on dog food) appreciated!

I don’t think you can go wrong with Beta Puppy. Reared loads of puppies on it who have all done very well. If you hunt around, can get it for a reasonable price as well.

Minefield with few wrong answers. I’ve had my vets look in to this and Autarky ticks a fair few boxes, especially for quality and price. They also have an in-house bet. I generally order it 8 tonnes at a time and it’s well received.

This is worth a read from a very knowledgable chap NUTRITION | glasybontgundogs

Have a look at the AllAboutDogFood site and see what looks good for puppies.

The site compares the percentage of ingredients. Most cheaper dry dog food has a large percentage of grain, rice or ash which give cheap bulk without nutrition.

When Pero stopped doing the organic food we were using, I opted for the first food to achieve AllAboutDogFood's 5* rating...Akela Wholeprey grain free 80% Chicken Fish Turkey and Egg 20% Fruit Veg vitamins and minerals...

I currently feed the little Springer once a day about 90g of the Akela and 250g of the Natural Instinct raw minced Chicken Turkey or Lamb and a pheasant leg or thigh. She often gets a deer or sheep bone to gnaw at weekends.

Royal Canin …. reassuringly ridiculously expensive.

I wish we’d put the pup on Sneyds straight away, rather than the Royal Canin that the breeder recommended, as our other dogs just love it. We’ve had Arden Grange, Skinners, Autarky and others in the past, but Sneyds ticks all the boxes for us.

If it's any good to anyone, the folks who live opposite us recently acquired a puppy. A cockerpoo (I know, I know). The place they got it from had a few litters on the go and whilst my neighbours were there, the puppies were hungry so the owners went around giving each pup a Jammie Dodger. Who knew that was a recognised food group for weeks old puppies?

.......Aye right.

I've always been pleased with how my pups have done on skinners puppy food and with skinners feed generally. I do mix mine with raw lamb, chicken, offal, eggs etc to add variety.

Il near that in mind when we next have pups.

Ours all seem to do pretty well on skinners from pups all the way through.
