Recommend me a dog coat for stalking

Now on my 5th Vizsla and they all have coped well with the winter conditions - yes they shiver, but normally it’s the excitement of the hunt and their eagerness. Doing some long days on the hill, we eventually decided to source something for our 4th Vizsla who was still working at 15 - he made it to 16, the others, sadly only 11. Unfortunately, the HV chest is very much deeper than labs, etc so off-the shelf stuff is not a good fit. Eventually, my wife heavily modified a very large Jack Pyke neoprene jacket to fit ours and our 5th Vizsla, our first bitch, now has her own made to measure one. I recently weakened and bought both the Land Rover dog jacket (going cheap) and a Hurrta raincoat which fit the breed well but I wouldn’t use them for stalking. Find a good seamstress :thumb:

Any one know why pictures rotate and how to stop it?

At one of the game fairs I bought a couple of the Welsh Lansdowncountry.co.uk "therma-dry" three-ply woven jackets to go on the spaniels during lunch and on the way home when beating. They wick any remaining moisture away with or without a towelling.

I also use one on the dogs as camouflage if rabbiting, the white chests are a bit of a giveaway otherwise.

Thanks for posting this.

We used to pick up the Equifleece dog coats at the Game Fair, but haven't seen them for a few years now. We always put them on the cockers after a hard days work in wet weather, and as you say they are great for wicking away all the moisture.

For me, if l take a photo with my iPad in portrait and save to my photos when and if l come to use them they rotate just like yours but if l take the photo in landscape they remain the correct orientation.

As anyone can tell I’m not very computer literate but it works for me.

Nice bitch by the way.

Well done. Mine is 9 now and the best dog I've ever had.

On the subject of getting chilly, mine always has. His wires have never grown out, so he has the coat of a smooth but the build of a wired. He's fine when on the move, but sit him up in the rain or cold for long and he will start to shiver. Sorted it with a 5mm neoprene coat. It didn't fit very well at first but a few careful darts and a bit of fabric cut away below the front legs and it's like a glove.

Neoprene likes to be glued and sewn so I used superglue to close the darts up, put a row of stitching along the new seam and a dab of superglue at the ends to stop the thread from running. Don't use too much of the stuff as it dries hard. The current one has done 4 years and works a treat. It doesn't snag on anything, is easy to wipe down or wash and does a good job of keeping him warm when he needs it.

I don't use it until he really needs it as I think overheating is as much of an issue as getting too cold.

What a stunner, I wish you luck, I have read lots about the HWV, GWP and even the little Teckels. I would love all of them. Too much for me and a young family.

We are collecting a lab on Saturday, even though I swore blind I wouldn’t have another dog after loosing our cocker last year.

I blame the head injury….
Labs are fantastic and are the ideal family dog! I have had them since I was a kid and they have all been great. You will have a great time with him/her over the next 12 years or so. I just couldn’t bring myself to have another after I had to put my best mate Brian to sleep last year 🥲 Somehow having a different breed made it a bit easier to accept.

Everyone loves a puppy 😁

What a great looking pup, he’s very well boned and looks to have the guard hairs coming through that will give him the wire hair protective coat that he needs.

Dare l ask what are his blood lines and where did he come from, only (maybe) some time in the future we just might take on another youngster ?

If you’d rather not say that’s perfectly fine.

My first Viz (long haired smooth if that makes sense) had a 3mm neoprene coat that was a custom job. It was great for sitting out on those wet snow days and still warm when wet etc. The only downside was that the neoprene shrank (a common problem with wetsuits etc) to the point that it doesn’t fit her anymore. The young WHV is a completely different shape and size so no go. Despite some Google fu I’m yet to find another supplier of custom cut neoprene dog coats. The others I’ve seen seem to be for pooch in the park or looking good on a peg/warm up at the end of the day, not ratching through deep bracken / bramble - the nearest I found was the Hurrta stuff, but not being able to get hands on I wasn’t convinced.
If you want have a look give me a shout next time you’re over this way.
