HGV Driver shortage

Absolutely true , I have lost a lot of respect for various hauliers. With good reason .
I wanted to try something new within driving , the 1st job had me working off my card when subbied out (not the bosses fault, he is a true gent ), the 2nd just lied and had me off card as did the 3rd . I explained politely to the 3rd my reasons for leaving and worked out my notice , he owes me 2 weeks wages 139 hours and 8 nights out . I was respectful throughout and am returning to my old.employer , who I may add didn't want me to run bent in any shape or form and paid wages on time and for whome I have a good deal of respect .
So yes , respect does work both ways . Unfortunately, there are far too many bad employers within the industry.
I think the problem is that some of the “super hauliers” are far from and actually believe their own PR !

If you don't mind me saying, as you admit you were running bent at times, maybe you are part of the problem, if people run bent then employers will use them, if you lose your licence it would be very doubtful it would worry who you worked for, It's a shame you didn't manage to work for a good firm, as the outlook would be very different, you are limited to what you can work legally and sticking to the rules isn't difficult.
There are and always have been cowboy firms in the Transport business, but a quick phone call to the DVSA would quickly sort them out, the rules are there to protect you and to make sure you are not exploited, if you are willing to flout them then you only have yourself to blame.

Up until moving jobs to find a new challenge, I'd had 6 infringements in 7 years . Keeping the right side of the law is something I had always prided myself on .
I know for me and many others pride won't let them fail to get the job done and yes , I have had to bend the rules to achieve the unachieveable . At interview, I have always stated that if pushed into these situations I won’t stay and I don't . The number of breaches I have under my belt are but a few , I give them one warning , it's either addressed or I'm out of there .

The standard answer with these companies is always the same ,"I didn't ask you to do that ". Whilst putting pressure on the drivers .

I am now returning to my old boss , on a different job welcomed back with open arms , knowing that normality will be returned .

Ringing the DVSA is an option , there may be some collateral damage . Good people trapped in bad jobs and how would you do that without incriminating yourself and others . The DVSA are now self funding and I've never heard of them giving an amnesty . You may know different .

All of this makes me sound bitter and angry , nothing could be further from the truth , what I am is disappointed . The industry needs to take a good look at itself .
