What’s happened to Scotland

On my way home from a bloody fantastic trip around the western isles fishing, walking, swimming and eating . But currently sat in Edinburgh station about to board the sleeper and the place is dead! When we arrived a couple of weeks ago none of the coffee shops or cafe’s in the city were serving coffee before 9 am, a lot of restaurants were just closed, and by 10pm the city was back to sleep. All through our journey we’ve found most pubs shut, a lot of restaurants closing at 5pm fuel stations just closed with notes written on the door like “shut Monday and Tuesday” and generally just a feeling of not alot of work being done! We spent a lot of time on sky and whilst fishing I lost my gear on the rocks, went to a fishing shop which was closed for lunch…… at 3pm!
the brilliant cafe in diurnish was closed Sunday Monday and Tuesday as was the sligachan on Skye after Sunday lunch service. The chippy looked at me like I was mental when I asked if he was still open at 9pm and a wee sandwich bar in broadford kindly smiled and said they only had black coffee available, no milk, no sandwichs

like I say, as I write this I’m sat in Edinburgh station about to board the sleeper to London. There is no where in the station open to even buy water, everywhere is closed, the bins haven’t been emptied and there is one porta cabin toilet in the whole station that’s open and working.
By comparison on our way up we left London at 23:50
I could still buy anything I needed to eat or drink, still get a taxi, massive facilities and as we all know these are open from the crack of dawn. I’ve left Smithfield market before at 3 am and been able to have a slap up brekky.
I love Scotland, I have family ties, and we’ve had a cracking trip but you really have to wonder what’s going to happen if they do go independent.
I understand the hgv driver shortages etc but don’t see how this can go on long term!

I think part of the problem is lack of staff in the hospitality sector. After 18 mths of little to no work they've all changed jobs and who can blame them. I bet it will take the same length of time to correct itself.

Scotland has had much longer and much stricter Covid restrictions than certainly England. Most offices are not open, or if they are are, then it is on a limited basis, so the early morning rush is not there. And we have lost a lot of European labour. Many businesses have dramatically reduced hours or just simply are not viable and thus don't bother opening.

Most cafes and restaurants still are mandated for you to have to prebook and fully register etc before going in. And we still have to wear masks everywhere. Many of us still can’t be bothered with all such hastle. If I want to sit down for a coffee, its because I need coffee - I don’t want to give my life’s history so that if somebody happens to have Covid they then ring me up etc.

And historically rural restaurants and pubs stop serving at 8.30 to 9pm.

Huge shortage of folks in the hospitality sector all over the uk. Heard of some offering £15/hr to wait on tables, before summer average was £9.50 - £11 including tips.

Maybe the vast majority of folks in Scotland are staying away from those places because they don't want to spread Covid. So it's not financially viable to stay open.

The bars that are open in Edinburgh, House of bruar, dunkeld and all the usual spots along the a9 would suggest there’s plenty of people in Scotland who couldn’t care a jot about staying away.

And some may say those going on holiday (far from their local areas) also don't care about spreading the virus to locals all thou some fairly rural areas that generally have never had high infection rates.

There is of course good in everything - even masks. No longer can you actually watch Kim Jong and her pack lying through their teeth!

Or gone home to europe
Last time I went to Scotland, which was 2018, when Parliament, the media and the establishment in general were still in denial and thought Brexit would somehow be made to disappear and everything would go back to normal, and EU nationals were still free to enter the UK, virtually everyone I met in the hospitality industry in Scotland was Scottish. Probably 90%. At least in the highlands. Didn't go near the central belt but I traveled to practically every corner of the highlands in the course of two weeks and virtually everyone who served me food, petrol, coffee or groceries or brought food to my table, was Scottish (and a few English migrants). I encountered very few European workers.
I think it's highly likely, as nick.308 said, that many of in Scotland's hospitality industry have left and sought alternative employment because endless lockdowns have destroyed what were already poorly paid jobs and they've had enough. That's not the fault of Brexit. You can't even blame it on the virus. It's political mismanagement and a complacent industry that took its staff for granted.

All are the sort of places that I have been avoiding for over 18 months, and will continue to avoid for the foreseeable future.

We were in Edinburgh just over a week ago. Had to laugh when we were instructed on the train to put our masks on when we reached Berwick.
Seriously though, Edinburgh was very quiet, and like a lot of city centres, a lot of shops had closed for business.

Although a good number of people were very pleasant and welcoming, the anti English rhetoric had definitely gone up a notch since my last visit, it has become a permanent feature of any trip there.

I think it's just a sign of the times. Lots of businesses have the attitude that if they can't employ an Eastern European, then they just won't bother. Truck drivers for instance. Lots of people too comfortable working from home or on furlough. Wee Kranky has her own agenda no doubt. Lots of scare mongering, talking about all the unvaccinated people of life support machines in hospitals. It looks like masks are here to stay. 100,000 Afghans on their way to the UK. The bad news never ends. Time to go for a stalk and leave all that doom and gloom behind; if only for a few hours.
