Scope for 308

Looking for a scope to go on my bergara b14 in 308, I will be using it mainly for woodland stalking but also a bit of casual targets at the permissions that I have.
My fallback will be an 8x56 S&B or another European fixed mag but would look at something like an element helix, budget would be £500 at the top end, what does everyone think.

For £500 you maybe able to find yourself a 3-12 or 2.5-10 powered schmidt or ziess. Meopta also make a good scope which you will find in your budget bit failing all that your fallback 8x56 will do the job

Variable magnification is always useful for woodland stalking, pick a low base magnification for the best low light performance, but check that the low magnification setting works well.

Old S&B can tunnel very badly (4-16 Precision Hunter is nearly unusable until 6x).

A 3-12 will stand you in good stead. Side focus/adjustable parallax is a nice feature too.

Illuminated reticle usually not needed unless you are shooting a DSC1 deer target.

I use a Schmidt 2.5-10x56 on my 308. Good bit of glass and is great at first/ last light.

It lives on x8 unless I'm in the few bits of woodland I have access to when it gets wound down.

illuminated is a nice to have but definitely not essential

The S&B 8x56 is a great option, and you'll get a good secondhand one for that price. I had one on my .308 for a long while (bought here), and only swapped it out when I was doing mostly target shooting with the rifle.
Now It's back as a hunting gun, I'm using a Swarovski 8x50, which is excellent - and very lightweight. You might have a look at that - again, you should get a good one within your budget. Mine cost me +/- £400 on here.

I own one of these Falcons and it has excellent glass that gives superb long range resolution. I can see individual bullet holes on paper targets at 600yds. It also has good elevation range and robust build. The clicks are bit mushy compared to my S&B PM11 but it's all round way more impressive than its £280 price would suggest. Strange that statement about needing illumination for the DSC-1 target. We shoot it regularly at BDS shoots and I have never seen anyone switch on an IR scope. - Even at competitions like the Scottish Inter Branch Shoot. - It's normally shot at close range (100 & 200 yards) in good light and the crosshairs show up just fine.
