New scope

I’m considering moving from a fixed Schmidt & Bender (8x56, no illuminated reticle) to variable, higher magnification with illuminated reticle. I’ve been looking at the GPO SPECTRA 5x 3-15x56. Budget is £1,000. I’m generally shooting out to 200m, red and roe with 308. Any scope suggestions, recommendations appreciated. Thanks

Find a no phaff, fixed parallax Z6i 2-12x50. Should be able to get a decent one within your budget.

I’d recommend avoiding parallax correction, just an unnecessary time waster. Just look directly down the scope.

I have both with and without parallax correction and I’m sure you can guess what I would keep as a “last” scope

GPO is a great scope, but for your needs as stated why change, uncles you need the lower mag for bush work.

For what do you need the higher mag? Chances are you'll set it 8x and never move it again.
(Although the option to go lower can be handy at last light and in woodland).

(Incidentally, I have a GPO scope for sale. Brand new, still in box, never been used or even mounted on a rifle. It doesn't have the kind of magnification you think you might want, but it does have the red dot illuminated reticle. And it's a mere fraction of your budget).

To be honest I always bought a variable mag scope but set a certain magnification which defeated the purpose really. I would stick with fixed 8x if you are only shooting out to 200m

As a good all rounder I’d advocate the GPO SPECTRA 4X 4-16x50. For performance, weight and price few new scopes will come close. Else, go for a 2nd hand S&B, Swaro or Zeiss.
