Red Deer Research Books

Can anyone recomend a good, modern book on red deer stalking and the ecology of the deer? Covering prefferably both stalking and the ecology, habits and so on of the species. I have a couple of old classics like William Scope's 'Art of Deer Stalking' but was looking for a more modern and up to date book.

Have a look for nature Scot best practice guide. Should be available on line, might not be exactly what you're looking for but it's a start.

The BDS used to do a small book called "Going to the Hill: An Introduction to Red Deer Stalking in Scotland".

It's mostly about what to expect when stalking on the Hill, what to take, etc. It's a little dated now, but useful if you've not tried Hill stalking before. I don't know if the BDS still stock it, but I see Coch-y-Bonddu has a copy:

Research into red deer ecology probably started with, "A herd of Red Deer" by Frank Fraser Darling in 1937, it's a classic and still relevant, recently re-published by Luath Press, Edinburgh in paperback.
Then not a lot seems to have happened for 40 years re: ecology. Until in 1977 The Institute of Terrestrial Ecology produced, "Ecology of Red Deer Red Deer - A research review relevant to their management in Scotland." There seems to have been a dearth of UK research and it draws heavily on European and N. American work, this may have prompted Fiona Guinness's project on Rum results of which you can find in, " Red Deer: Behaviour and ecology of two sexes, Clutton-Brock, Guiness and Albon, 1982, it's available on Amazon., £59 for the hardback and £33 for the paperback. Your local library should be able to get all of these for you on inter-library loan ( if you still have one that is.)

As I was trawling through Amazon on your behalf I found a completely new title to be published this month, "Chasing the Deer - Red deer through the seasons" by Neil Mcintyre, you can pre-order. As I haven't read it I can't comment but if the publisher is reading this perhaps he'll send me a free copy for review.

So plenty of stuff on ecology but very little on actually stalking in Scotland , perhaps because there isn't much more to be said than you'll find in the booklet willie_gunn recommended, "Going to the hill.......an introduction to red deer stalking in Scotland.

I hope this helps

The post by @Craigard reminded me on another book you might want to look out - though it is getting increasingly scarce.

It is "A Highland Deer Herd and its Habitat", by Milner, Alexander & Griffin and published in 2002. Beautifully produced, with copious illustrations, the book was the result of research undertaken on the Letterewe estate, owned by Paul van Vlissingen.

There is a copy on eBay in the States at the moment, but it is for sale at $399 and they don't ship to the UK. Remarkable, considering it originaly cost £24, direct from the estate!

Thank you for finding that!

Neil McIntyre is a superb wildlife photographer.

He co-authored "Red Deer" with Tim Clutton-Brock, who you mention above.

His new book on red deer is available for pre-order on his website.....which I've just done!

They certainly know how to charge for that book! Shame, it sounds very interesting minus the price tag.

My copy of "Chasing the Deer" by Neil McIntyre has just been delivered.

Absolutely stunning photography, and thoroughly recommended.

Struggling to find my copy, but I recall Paul van Vlissingen laird/owner Letterewe Estate wrote a book on Red Deer.

Yes, that's A Highland Deer Herd and it’s Habitat, published in 2002. It was funded by Paul van Vlissingen, and based on research on the deer on his estate at Letterewe, but he didn't actually write it - the authors were Milner, Alexander & Griffin.

I hope you manage to find your copy, as these days it is worth quite a bit of money. 🤞

I was searching for one and couldn't find it anywhere. There were a few online PDF versions however. I've made a note of it and will be keeping an eye out at the Holt's auctions. They often have some rare and reasonably priced sporting books on the block.
