Hi looking at some altberg army surplus boots on eBay but what does L/W stand for after the size

I have a pair of altberg boots from the country range that I shoot in but just wanted a pair for walking the dogs in as don’t like wellies but didn’t want to spend a fortune so not sure what army surplus model everyone wears.
I know hail do them also but used to have hail chainsaw boots issued and they were like slippers but only at the point they were knackered before that they were grim.

The surplus boots often recommended on this forum are the Altberg Defenders or the Haix Cold Wet weather boots. Both are excellent.

They don’t come in half sizes but rather widths. 9M (Medium) being a true 9 and 9W (Wide) being closer to a 9.5.

The older boots were M medium width and W wide.
Latest issue ones I have are labelled L for the same wide fitting. The Altberg website has a fitting guide as far as I know.
The half size is made by not fitting the included insoles, that reduce the size/space within the boot.

I’ve used the Haix ecw’s for beating and they’ve been very good despite my complete lack of care for them……I’m now looking at the equivalent Iturri boot to replace them…with the added bonus of a rubber rand a la Meindl to protect the leather. The prices are now getting reasonable on ebayl

It denotes the width of the fitting.

On UK military boots they use the S/M/L format for small/medium and large.

On most US boots they use (confusingly) the following:

D=medium
W= wide
EE= Is also wide in some brands.

Altbergs being British and issued will use S/M and L.

Make Sense?

My recently-arrived Defenders are a touch small, even after following the guide (and taking insoles out) so will have to size up a bit. Cracking boots though.

i have used alberg defender boots for many years the used to have a small blue tag on the togue to indicate wide fitting,bought two pays last december for £35 a pair and the box include new boots ,white socks ,two pairs of spare laces and tin water proof grease/dubbin. that included postage so a bargain.a pair lasts me about 18 months to two years if looked after but the sole does wear out a bit quicker.

You lucky devil ,we started with Dms dice cups but switched to high leg cardboard. As flexible as a brick or blisters are us as we called them.

great boots but as said above, soles does seem to wear out quickly but for the price absolute bargain
