'British big game hunters to be banned from bringing trophies home'

I know theres a lot of basc bashing on here, some deserved and some undeserved but people really need to open their eyes to what is happening, were talking years not decades. We need to seriously get our house in order. What happens to country sports if we get a labour/snp/greens style coalition at the next GE? Sad world for the next generation of countrymen/women to be brought into

It would be interesting to know how many SD members there are and how many actually completed the Defra consultation on the Trophy Ban. ?

If we all don’t start supporting each other irrespective of what your interest in shooting are then we will all loose out.

Im not quite sure how you can consider basc did a pretty good job when the government is going with one of its most extreme options that were put forward. Judging by the defence provided on this topic, shooting in the UK is already doomed.

Approximately 37000 supported a total ban on the import / export of trophies. Approximately 4500 supported the counter options. BASC asked it's membership to respond to the consultation, provided a link to the Defra website, stated which options it thought appropriate, and submitted its own response. It's a shame that more of out own community didn't respond to the consultation.

There are 26,000 members on here alone. granted some not active but still we could have generated more than 4000 responses just from this one platform. The “can’t be bothered” “doesn’t effect me” attitude has truly shown what we as a community are capable of and that’s very little.

I am gutted. I filled in the consultation against the ban. I had hopes that one day if I worked hard and saved up I might... now I will be left wishing I had.

It’ll spell the end of some species, as they have largely outlived their utility for some burgeoning communities in places like Africa, they won’t tolerate them when their crops and cattle are being damaged, the poachers will have a field day for the Far Eastern ‘medicine’ market.

For a supposedly intelligent species, we do have an innate way of destroying everything when politics and politicos get involved. Better they left what they don’t know about to those who do.

Yep, people that dont support each other are as much use as the anti's. Nearly 600k shotgun certificate holders in the UK, 150k fireaems certificate holders, that could have made all the difference. The organisations and us as individuals need to do much better. Letters penned with 600k signatures cannot go unnoticed.

My understanding is it needs to be 600k individual letters; BASC's submission would have counted as a single response.

@The Beater i think youre right and a moments thought would make you seriously worried about an organisation having the power to respond for 600k looking at what all of them did around the lead issue. However, if we dont start to change the way were represented were in serious trouble mate

For public consultations it has to the individual that responds for any outcome you want , Buying into an organisation and hoping that they will be listened to is taking a big risk.

The individuals have to take the time to fill in theses consultations, they are long winded but the anti hunting brigade will do it and win.

Have the the anti’s got more passion then the average FAC holder to get what they believe in? Very possible with how this public consultation went.

And a public statement from campaign to ban trophy hunting today.
“Whilst we welcome the trophy import ban we want to extend this further by banning all hunting in the U.K.”
they are coming for the rest of you now.

This is disgusting and needs to be a wake up call for our entire industry. Whilst the government and individuals around the government are largely to blame, the organisations that "represent" us should be ashamed. First lead, now trophies, shooting is going the way of fox hunting but well done everyone pandering to masses, your sport is going to disappear
Yes, but how many bothered to respond to the consultation? Don't forget "for evil to prevail, all it takes is good men to remain silent ".
How many in Wales bothered to respond to the consultation on General licences?
We had the same apathy with the banning of self loading rifles and pistols. The mentality was, and is now, "IT WON'T AFFECT ME, !'M ALRIGHT JACK." "WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT OTHER PARTS OF THE SPORT?"

I am involved in a rifle range whose members include deerstalkers, fox controllers. vermin controllers , target shooters as well as a great many who use shotguns in the field. To my knowledge just one, other than myself ,could be bothered to respond to either of these consultations. Those that didn't, should hang their heads in shame , you deserve to lose your sport.

Yes i agree completely, were doomed. It wasnt exactly difficult or in the grand scheme of things time consuming to fill in either

As I’ve said on here many times before United we stand divided we fall and unfortunately we are as always divided and the fall is coming probably sooner than any of us imagine.

What you are all forgetting, the numbers of the shooting community is NOTHING in the grand scheme of the viting electorate!

What we do is not pink and fluffy and is not kind to the public eye in fact they hate what we do!

You can write as many letters, and jump up and down as much as you like, its not going to make naff all difference.

Of which i am very sorry to say.

It a shame you have that view. You are a defeatist and without a fight from people like minded as you it makes it very difficult. If you feel for your sport then no matter how futile a rebuttle may seem everyone must stand up and be counted.
I have seen more passion about mask wearing on here thann the protection of what we do. Some people need to grow up, wake up, and pull together

What would you suggest BASC should do?
To be honest I do not think that BASC “can do” very much. Particularly when seen against the backdrop of so many posts complaining about their rolling over on pretty much any issue which threatens our sport. I hate to say it but it is just another nail in the already well-nailed box, they like their many sister organisations, have for too long ploughed a lonely furrow instead of consolidating with all the many shooting organisations to offer a united front. The same of course applies to the sister organisations. A pity.

The evidence submitted by such as Eduardo Goncalvez over this was at some points simply wrong ; e.g. "only 1300 rhinos left in Africa". The potential impact on conservation and on rural economies in southern Africa is grim. Just take a look at prof adam hart twitter this morning - all those retweets are not from hunters but from professional conservationists who know that more land is protected by hunting interests than in national parks in SADC and contiguous states.
