My apologies. We are clearly talking about different folk, any travellers I have come into contact with have certainly not done anyone 'proud', nor ever will. My bad.

Those days are long gone for the vast majority of Irish people.

They are most often referred to as "Travellers".

Knacker is seen as a degrogatory name by most Irish people unless used when referring to someone's occupation from times gone by which is explained in this tribute.....

I beg to differ, people have been brow beaten and bullied by Pavee Point and various other left wing uber liberal factions into masking their true opinions, however that term is regularly used and they deserve every bit of approbation that comes their way. I have had five personal interactions with members of this group over the years and without exception they have been unpleasant, intimidatory and disquieting. The most recent because I pointed out to one of them that reversing the wrong way up a one way street was unwise, his response "...I'll drive over ya, I'll drive f*^+" drive over ya! which he then attempted to do. Five for five, by any standard that's exceptional consistency

I'm about as far from a sensitive disposition as you are from Éire, so there's no need to apologise because we don't agree.

Travellers are recognised as a distinct ethnic group here in Ireland since 2017, this is not a gift bestowed upon them but a fact that the Irish state has formally acknolweged since the 1st of March 2017.

Long before then lots of Travellers have done their culture and Ireland proud on the international stage, particuarly in music and sport.

Yes by the Fine Gael incompetent Enda Kenny and it's a travesty of justice to afford them any further support to their sense of being special. Which apparently justifies their commonly odious and appalling behaviour.

I am no supporter of anyone who flagrantly breaks the law, trespasses or threatens violence against home owners, tenants and landowners but some of the comments on here - come on, we can do better than that.

I know the criminality associated, I have investigated losses relating to nearby ‘encampments’. Some acquaintances have been driven nuts, some have a very clear transactional relationship once they knew there would be severe consequences for some local ringleaders if they stepped out of line. Ive worked with some from that background who joined my profession, trying to better themselves and be part of society. They are human beings.

I dont think we can (as a society) have it both ways. We cant keep ‘moving them on’ and complain when they rock up on someones property. Provide the facilities, or at least dont make planning so ridiculous, keep them there and give kids chance to go to school, where they might get an education and contribute.

Nothing will change while they get moved from site to site.

I could list dozens of positive interactions I've had with travellers in business, sport and social settings.

I could also list some bad interactions I've had with people who were not travellers, some of them are people in positions of trust or high profile business people from Cork that I would not trust the radio in their cars.

It takes all sorts to make a world and none of us are perfect.

I have seen the effects first hand. Im no innocent, far from it.
What Im suggesting is, nothing will change while they move on, and move on....

I spoke to the gypsy and traveller liaison of a large council a few years back. He vouchsafed from many years working with them that they were a widely misunderstood people, and that they did not deserve the vitriol and opprobrium aimed at them.

After a pint he offered his more truthful opinion that they deserved far, far more given his belief that they were the scrapings of the dregs barrel of the most utterly contemptible scum of the earth. He added that he’d gone into the job with an open mind, and had it made up for him with how they behave, but wasn’t allowed to say it.

Personally, I make no comment on the above other than I’m zero for about twenty in pleasant dealings with Irish travellers.
