Refinishing pitting on outside of barrel. Possible or pointless

A friend just sent me a picture of an air rifle he has obtained, not a great looker as it has sat in the former owners shed for some considerable time!!
Assuming it groups, when he gets to try it out, would a refinish of some sort be feasible (duracoat, plasticoat?)
or is it doomed to remain a minger?

If the bore is in similar condition it may be best sourcing a replacement barrel from chambers or similar then starting the refurb

Does it group ,,,,,

Have a watch of this. Often the rust is far worse and needs converting to blue. Odd bit of pitting on an old gun just adds character.

Apparently oil and Brass wool or oil and the edge of a copper coin.
Will not remove pitting but will smooth the barrel without damage to the bluing .
Look up ‘ the cinnabar’ on YouTube and American called Mark has done two videos on rust removal will hopefully help you

Wrap it, stock removed of course, in cloths soaked in paraffin. Leave it so for a week. Or more. It'll remove most of the rust. Or use Evaporust which will remove all the rust in matter of hours.

By using steam or boiling water you can covert all the rust to blue. You can do this either with a vertical or horizontal bath, or make a vertical steam tube. Have a watch of the video.
